The Easy Allies thread

Recommended Posts

Daniel Kayser, Ryan Stevens and a slew of other Gametrailers folks (many of which you likely watched during E3 coverage) are out of a job.

Kyle Bosman, Daniel Bloodworth, Marco Rosado, Ian Hinck, Elyse Willems, Ben Moore, Michael Huber, Brandon Jones and Mike Damiani look like all that remains...

I'm not sad to see Kayser go.  He seemed a little too douchey to me during E3 this year.  Maybe because he was losing his job.

Yeah they knew going into E3 they were losing their jobs.  I have a few friends that work for the Defy mothership.

Gametrailers comes to a close today after thirteen years...

I'm sad to hear this. Was the writing on the wall? I don't know. Perhaps so. You could almost sense, particularly though Bosman's show, how GT was seemingly being whittled down to nothing since 2014. They almost always had a consistent run of decent and inoffensive staff, and I have bags of affection for The Final Bosman. I hope the remaining staff can quickly move on to pastures new, and that Kyle perhaps manages to continue his show as a self-funding Youtube channel.

Apparently the staff only found out hours before the public announcement. I hope that is not true.  :(

I'm pretty much out of websites to turn to for gaming news and reviews. What the hell happened?

End of an era, for sure.

They can't make a profit.

I used to watch a ton of content on GameTrailers: Bonus Round, Pach Attack, the video reviews, the Top 10 lists, the retrospectives, and of course, the game trailers themselves. Over the years though, it seemed like the content thinned out and I watched it less and less. The Final Bosman was a real highlight in recent years, but even that was a show that I only watched occasionally even though I always enjoyed it when I did.

Looking at the content I consume these days, it’s obvious that I still like shows about video games. I subscribe to a few gaming channels on YouTube and listen to several podcasts. The game trailers are easily found on YouTube as well, mostly through accounts run by the game developers and publishers. And just about every major gaming website does its own video reviews now as a companion to the written one. In fact, the content is more plentiful than ever. It’s just that it’s scattered now across many sources rather than all coming from one place.

Am I sad to see GT close down? A bit, but it’s not as if I’m suddenly losing a bunch of shows I loved to watch all at once. Those have long since vanished.

I love Bosman, and hope he's able to continue what he was doing somewhere else.

After they were bought by Defy, it seemed like Gametrailers had one foot in their old model, and one foot in a newer, more personality focused model with Bosman and Huber, but never fully committed to either.

It must have been tricky. Inserting more personality into proceedings kept them in tune with what was emerging via Youtube/Twitch, meanwhile not straying from their old model was a safe way to hold on to long term visitors, but committing to one or the other was probably never going to save them. Defy could have canned Gametrailers three years ago, so they probably deserve some credit for keeping things afloat for as long as they did.

It's strange to witness what often seems like a total annihilation of games journalism whilst other specialist subjects, both in print and digital, continue to find their audience (cars, photography, movies...etc). Perhaps it was only ever a small subset of the gaming public who gave enough of a damn to actually read about one of their favourite hobbies to begin with, and that in the modern world the demand just isn't big enough to keep games magazines and websites afloat anymore.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I AM AN SVP AT DEFY MEDIA.

You're both wrong and right - as a content vertical, gaming has never been bigger. Let's Play, Twitch, etc. are absolutely gargantuan. Our Smosh and Smosh games channels are massive. The Escapist is still doing well. AweMe is killing it.

You're right in that games journalism is going through a major - let's call it a correction, however. It grew quickly and got too big for its own britches. Too many personalities fighting to be heard, to be taken seriously, to be read.

I was wondering if you might chime in. It's a really interesting landscape out there. So really, it's much like a lot of other media, where even a lot of the good stuff is suffering/fading away due to over saturation? It's still a shame that we've lost some of the better long running sites as a consequence (1up, Joystiq, Gametrailers) whilst IGN and Gamespot remain. I must admit I am not aware of Smosh.

To be clear, I had nothing to do with GT's shuttering. Not my division.

I think it was a pretty expensive operation, what with all the live feeds and personalities and events and what-not.

Just teasing. :)

I don't doubt the expense. As I wrote earlier in fact, I think Defy deserve some credit for keeping Gametrailers alive when they acquired it a few years ago. I do hope to see some familiar GT staff surface elsewhere though.

I don't have any kids. Once again I have failed.

Why don't you have any kids? Is your wife not interested in having a family or something?

I thought Kyle was going to break into a Footloose dance when he got up and ran. :)

Sounds like he is also going to be doing his own things alongside the Easy Allies feeds.

More Bosman is good. Very good. He's not allowed to retain 'The Final Bosman' name though.
