Next Generation Codecs: HEVC/H.265, VP9, AV1

Recommended Posts

More than a year later... h.265 and VP9 are both coexisting... VP9 basically because youtube...h.265 everywhere else.

But AV1 is in development (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AOMedia_Video_1), an evolution of VP9, combined with some tools from Mozilla's Daala and Cisco Thor codecs.

The alliance includes: Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix

Youtube will transition into AV1 for the highest resolutions (I'm assuming 4K) 6 months after the bitstream syntax is finalized.
