Angry the Clown

Disneyland/World and Universal parks discussion thread (where the magic never ends... until a ride you loved is knocked down and replaced with something lame)

First look at Galaxy’s Edge food:

Merchandise (I like the "handmade" plush toys we've seen before, and I also like the assortment of creatures you'll be able to buy. I wonder if those are puppets? I also wonder if they collaborated with Sphero for the droids? They do rather look like deluxe sized Sphero droids. You can buy a Rex!):

Concept art for some of the land’s shop locations:

Cast member costumes:

Details on the Falcon ride, finally with a description of how they create the illusion that you’ve boarded the ship:

Rise of the Resistance details. This sounds absolutely mind blowing (and the details Disney shared primarily relate to the queue and first segment of the ride that’s actually a walkthrough):

I really hope that Orlando is open early November, because if it is, I might just have to take an extra day before Ignite and spend it in line for these things...

And I saw an article recently that said it was as high as 6 hours on one particular day.  That's crazy.

Yeah, that's still super busy.  We got on it in 2 hrs last December, but I heard from people who were down last month that it was still a few hours.  No idea what Star Wars is going to be like.  That's why I was assuming that, if given the chance to check it out, I'd probably do a day at Studios with the express goal of just seeing the two SW attractions, given that the next family trip that way is probably a-Universal focused, and b-not for at least another couple of years.

It's not looking like I will be able to get out to California next May sadly. Perhaps 2021 is my best bet. I'd sooner go back there first before contemplating a return to Florida (it'll be twenty-five years come August since I was last at WDW. Perhaps I should leave it another five and celebrate going back after what would then be thirty years). It's going to be hard to resist watching any ride videos from Galaxy's Edge on Youtube.

I’m surprised at both dates, especially WDW. That’s not even Fall, let alone late fall.

Yes both are a good two months ahead of what most people expected I think.

When does Mickey and Minnie open at the Studios? I think that was set for a Summer opening but I wonder if it will now come after Galaxy’s Edge. You’d think opening it before Star Wars would be smarter to spread guest congestion and not have its opening dwarfed in the shadow of GE hype and hysteria.

This is interesting. Rise of the Resistance will not be open at launch and will instead have a separate openeing “later in the year”...

It’s unclear whether this phased opening will just be for Anaheim or both parks. Could well be both if its an attempt to soften crowds.

In another move to ease crowds guests to Disneyland will have to pre-register for entry into GE from May to the end of June.

Also Smugler’s Run will open without Fastpass.

Ya. That is a bit of a surprise. I hope it’s not too far behind though. I would guess it’ll be somewhere around the originally speculated and announced opening dates for the lands.

Hopefully at least. Those trackless vehicle rides are notoriously finicky to get operating smoothly.

It’ll be interesting to see how this affects crowds, especially in Anaheim. There could be a large number of people (especially annual APs that are blacked out) that may decide to wait until both attractions are open. Those that do make two trips, may not linger in the land quite as long trying to soak everything in at once if they know they’ll come back soon.

With all the information that has come out recently from the media sneak peaks, I am super excited for Galaxy’s Edge. It sounds like they’ve really gone above and beyond with details, thinking things through, and just creating an immersive experience. It will be very interesting to see what happens when ops actually takes control though.

Rise of the Resistance just sounds breathtaking. The scale of it all just seems like it is massive. My favourite rides (Pirates, Mansion, Indy) always have a scale to them that impressed me.

There’s a chance I may get to go in October. Fingers crossed.

Yes, Resistance truly sounds spectacular. Again, I will do my best to not watch queue walkthrough and ride videos until a year comes when I can experience it for myself. Going to aim for Cafornia in 2021 I think.

DAAAMMMN YOUUUUU!

I will surely watch some of the Black Spire land/store/restaurant walkthroughs. I’m a little concerned we’ve not had any confirmation of Paul Rubens voicing Rex yet.

Speaking of the restaurants:

😮

Despite all we see and read I am not sure anything will quite prepare us for seeing all this in person.

I’m curious to see how they differentiate the Creature Stall purchases from typical plush merchandise. We’ve seen the photos, but I’m guessing they might make noises? Maybe even be puppets? The toad like creature reminds me of those old Boglin puppets.

Obviously I want a Porg.

Carley Wisel from travel and leisure was on the Disunplugged podcast and mentioned that the creatures made sounds as you pet them.

I don't do theme parks, because I'm rubbish at getting motion sickness from rides. But I am SO there for petting aliens.

Brief behind the scenes look at new Potter coaster at Universal Orlando that we haven’t talked about much in a while. It opens in June.

It’s really quite a bafflingly long winded name for a ride but I’ve little doubt that as a themed experience it will live up to the standards set by the rest of the Potter lands (that the re-skinned dueling dragons surely lacked in comparison).

Lovely theming.

I wonder how similar the ride vehicles are going to be to the Tron lightcycles?  In any case, looks neat.  Dueling dragons was a decent ride (with a horrible queue), that never really fit well as a re-theme.

While the promo art is of course not 100% accurate to what it’ll be, the implication seems to suggest someone will sit in the bike seat, and another in the neighbouring sidecar. The bike seat lock in mechanisn could indeed be somewhat similar to Tron (albeit with the guest positioned a little more upright).

It’s funny how “magical creatures” is in a much smaller font in the ride logo there, as if they know people will actually just refer to it as Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure (which begs the question why not just call it that officially in the first place? 🤷‍♂️ I wonder if there is some kind of obligation to Warner to play into ‘Fantastic Beasts’ by using a similar name).

With Us seemingly cementing Jordan Peele’s place as one of the great filmmakers of today, only amping up anticipation of his Twilight Zone reboot, I wonder if it would be within the realms of possibility that Disney could bring him in and re-do the pre-show and narration for Tower of Terror? It’s the one property in the parks they don’t own (unless you count the band Aerosmith), but if Twilight Zone is a hit then it might be smart to ride off its success.

I don’t think I’d be against the changes so long as the ride story and period setting remained unaltered.

We haven’t discussed this but it’s getting interesting. Universal will not confirm but this is all supposedly prep work for a launch coaster in the Jurassic Park region of Islands of Adventure.

That's certainly a bunch of space being cleared out for something.  I think I just read something about a change to the JP ride in Hollywood, so it wouldn't surprise me if they went and did something new at IoA as well.  Still, if there's a new HP coaster opening this summer, and Hulk already, isn't another straight Launch Coaster a little redundant?  If it was something unique (like maybe something where the ride vehicles are those spheres from the movie, and it's a giant hamster ball bobsled track) that could be interesting.
