Bad Times at the El Royale - great performances by all involved, specially Cynthia Erivo and Lewis Pullman (son of Bill). I was really loving the style and mystery of this movie up until

Spoiler

Hemsworth’s character shows up.

At this point, the movie took a

dark

turn that took me out of my enjoyment of the film though the movie pays this off quite nicely.  I wonder if this is what kept Joel from enjoying the movie more than he did.

Great cast and loved the music.

Life Itself - Amazon Prime

Not a tear was jerked from me in this morose, zigzagging tale meant to tug at your emotions, and then to land you in a happy place.  From the creators of "This is Us", it''s a strange tale of lives intertwined and irrevocably altered by a single event.   The rom-com elements are fun, as is the weird narration style, but it is NOT a rom-com!   Watch it with your wife for free husband points.

I give it 2 out of 5 nasal singers.

Carlos.

When Angels Sleep - Netflix (spanish)

Starts off promising, but quickly goes south.  A businessman trying to drive home takes some back roads, gets sleepy, and hits a girl on the side of the road, then spends all night chasing her friend who is too scared to let him help her, while he's being too stupid to realize he is scaring the fuck out of her!

It's not worth the watch, but if you do watch, watch it in the original Spanish with subtitles, because the English dub is laughingly bad.

I give it 1 out of 5 Angels with Filthy Souls.

Carlos.

Train to Busan - I really enjoyed this modern take on a zombie infestation. Perhaps a little predictable at times, but it's very well executed and the pacing is great.

City of Ghosts - A documentary following a group of citizen journalists recording and presenting to the world, at great personal risk, life inside Raqqa, the self-proclaimed capital of the ISIS caliphate. Absolutely harrowing film, which gives renewed appreciation for the freedoms we have, and also demonstrates forcefully why a free press is so critical. A tale of real life heroes.

Train to Busan is one of my favorite zombie related things in the past five years :).

If you dug Busan, make sure to give “The Wailing” a shot. Very different films but both are South Korean films and both are very worth your while.

Watched Bird Box and Quiet Place.  Both really good.  I'd say both of their gimics are really cool. QP has better character arcs because they focus on 4 characters and you get to care about them more than the characters in BB.  QP also has a more cookie cutter horror plot and antagonist.  Felt very familiar and predictable.  Though really good and enjoyable.  I have to say that I was bothered by a lot more in QP insofar as the character decisions.  BB, although I really like their gimic, and the way and reason that people die, I consider the antagonist kind of unbelievable.  Interestingly I like the antagonist better in QP, even though it is much more a familiar retread.

Overall we liked both movies and it seems a stretch to bother to rank them.  They're both good and have their pros and cons.

My last thought is that with a few tweaks, QP would be one of my favorite horror movies of all time.  It just had some obvious and fixable flaws.  And I think I feel that way because it follows the beats of so many movies before it that it is easier for me to dissect it than BB.

Very different films indeed.  The Wailing is a slow burn but so disturbing.  Enjoyed both very much.

I read several articles over the weekend about how Bird Box is a terrible movie.  I knew this was the case, that some people think it is terrible.  Opinions are like assholes, but the critic types have a stick up their asses on this one.  In the end, I always feel fortunate if I enjoy 2 hours watching something.  Whether it is grass growing, Shawshank Redemption, or porn, to each his own.

Bird Box has its issues but it’s not terrible. Its mediocre at best and there are far worse ways to spend your time in so far as movies are concerned.

You could have watched that last Jurassic World shitfest for example.;)

Wow, you just triggered me with that one.  I actually went to the theater to watch that one, because my daughter and I liked the previous.  Barf.

Are you saying we’re watching The Happening at the next meet? ;)

Saw The Favourite tonight. Really fantastic. From top to bottom a real gem. It’s called a comedy, but it really defies simple categories. It’s tragically funny and sharp as a tack. It’s cynical and lavish and artful.

Really, one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while.

Saw Won’t You Be My Neighbor? yesterday. Quite a lovely documentary, where the filmmakers stay out of the way and allow the subject of the film to shine through. It’s a portrait of a remarkable man with a remarkable outlook on the world.

It’s the latter point that stuck with me most after watching. Particularly at this point in history when so many in power aren’t even hiding their selfish motives and inward focus, Fred Rogers shows the courage and power of being radically open.
