Real names

Recommended Posts

Any chance a field can be added to our profiles for our real names?

I'd like to say I can remember everyone's name but the simple fact of the matter is I have difficulty remembering my phone number (yet there's room up there for the old up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start code).

Anyway, I'd like to be able to address many of you with your name...I somehow feel rude using your screen name.

I think this is a damn good idea, actually. I'd have used my real name but frankly if you ever find me playing a game online it'll be using my devilishly punnish moniker above. Mainly because those rat bastard bioterrorists made my OLD nick slightly un-PC ;).

Use this as your quick reference Camp, I'm Mark Evans :P. Actually, hell, I'll add it into my sig. I don't like hiding behind a username anyway.

Thanks for the support, Mark.

BTW, before someone asks "Camp" is my name (kind of). I got all kinds of shit form the HTF people because of their stupid "must use your real name" rule. They denied my membership twice before caving in...I still think they 'watch' me

Did they really? That's rather amusing actually, since it's not me ;). Seriously though, I've always assumed your name was Camp. Maybe I'm just more open-minded :P.

well i can see why they want real names at HTF for the simple fact there are industry people on there and so forth. Everyone knows my name anyway :-)

the problem with forcing people to use realnames is 1) you must manually approve every new membership 2) how do you know that the name is really their real one and 3) most gamers go by there handles anyways, even in real life.

plus i don't feel like reprogramming phpBB :P

Well the rule was enforced long before the HTF had any industry support, it was really put there to avoid silly use of names like Hitler (a Hitler did sign up once and was swiftly deleted!), and the obligatory online handles of things like DarthFlanders2089....etc...etc.

I'm not really a fan of using a fake name myself, I did so years and years ago when I first got online but people were quick to steal it and pose as me and so on, and so on. Quickly got nasty, so I gave up on the whole fake name thing and remain very British, thus very boring. :)

It should be added I believed about ten, maybe twenty percent of HTF members use realistic, but fake names.... Some may carry alternate surnames....etc. In retrospect, that's kind of a smart thing to do with the internet what it is these days. I shant name who I know does it.

Is that really true? Should I call Romier Futurevoid when I meet him? :P I can't see Brian asking anybody to call him Dogbert either ;).

Actually except for HTF and here i never use my real name in online stuff. When i used to be into CCG's, when i went to tournaments people still called me capt or DS as we were so used to calling each other by our online names.

Really? That... boggles my mind. I suppose I don't game in person enough outside of my boardgame crew :P. I can't imagine anybody ever calling me Pharmboy. Well, I could, but I'd be pissed since it's a throwaway name anyway ;).

Don't be silly.

I have it on good authority that he prefers "Your Grace" or "El Guapo".

More on point, isn't the name thing easier addressed by signing off your posts with your name?

For example:

And how typical is it that the first solution we thought of was modifying the phpBB code/editing fields instead of just adding our real names to our posts or sigs?

I'll chime in just to say Snow Crash is one of my all time favs as well.

Maybe the Wachowski bros. should take a look at that property after their Matrix trilogy concludes this year. We can dream, can't we?

I firmly believe that Snow Crash should remain in the realm of the paperback. Lord of the Rings is the only truly exceptional book-to-movie translation I can think of. Snow Crash is too good to leave anything out of, and it would lack Stephenson's flair for description.

Can you imagine trying to explain some of those concepts in a movie? Snow Crash has some pretty intelligent conversation going on there and I think it'd be so dumbed down in a movie to be depressing :P.

I think much of Snowcrash would be lost in translation to the big screen. Better to just leave it as is, in my mind. Speaking of which, has anyone heard anything about Stephenson's new book,

Quicksilver? Seems to be keep getting pushed back (sounds like alot of games I'm waiting for).

Not to further hi-jack this thread, but how are Stephenson's other books anyway? I haven't read any except Snow Crash, but am certainly interested. Just haven't made the effort.

...and how does Snowcrash compare to Gibson's Neuromancer? I've always intended to read Snowcrash as people tell me I'd love it but I have a backlog of about 8 books right now.
