Holy Fucking Shit! Look at this message I just got on Twitter from the official Xbox account: I guess I made the right move by not buying Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order yet, huh? Because that shit is MINE. 😁 😁 😁

The wife and I decided to make this the "Board Game Christmas." I've had worse ideas. Looking forward to finally getting to see what all the fuss is about with Gloomhaven. I received Nemesis as an early gift, so I painted it up and brought it over to the in-laws. We played until 4:30 in the morning. Some died, but all had a great time. Understand, these people think of Monopoly as the height of board game technology and know little else on the subject. Minds were blown.

I’ve wanted Suspiria on UHD but $40 for the disc is just too much.

Noteworthy article of studio views on the home video market in 2020 and their investments in "transactional" (i.e physical) media: https://variety.com/2020/biz/news/home-entertainment-2020-outlook-streaming-1203454629/ There has to be an error there with the Cunningham quote on Wizard of Oz as that's a Warner disc and he works for Universal. Not sure if that whole passage is in fact supposed to be attributed to Jim Wuthrich from Warner. I suspect it might be. That's honestly a more optimistic outlook from the major studios than I had expected, and it is particularly nice to hear that they continue to recognise the value of collectors, their loyalty, and that there's still a vital proportion of consumers who see value in discs still offering the highest quality. I'd have certainly liked to have heard more emphasis on catalogue titles however, particularly from Fox/Disney who only talk up new releases (interesting that JoJo Rabbit is mentioned, however. Retailer listings have appeared for that already and if it holds that would be the first Fox Searchlight UHD disc as typically Fox skipped Searchlight titles on the format, opting only for 20th Century Fox and Fox 2000 titles). Paramount once again seem pleased with the sales they are seeing. Strange then that their 2019 output was quite low-key compared to the previous year when they announced they were particularly bullish on getting catalogue content out there. Sending Chinatown and the Beverly Hills Cop movies to 4k streaming but not to disc is puzzling, unless there is a timed exclusive deal we don't know about (It's a Wonderful Life did get a one year head-start on iTunes before it hit disc, and even with the delay I applaud Paramount for putting the first golden age b&w classic out there on UHD). They all seem to share a sentiment on improving marketing and distribution which is interesting, and exploring new ways to display content at retail. It's possible they might be more aggressive come time of PS5 and XBox Series X I suppose. I really think retail prices of discs need to drop from 5-10 $/£ this year, particularly as we get closer to the next-gen consoles launching.

Pre-CES leaks show a OLED48CX 48" OLED from LG this year, as well as the debut of an 8k 65" OLED65ZX. They will also have a display that rolls down from the ceiling. Any performance boost to LG's processing would be welcome. I don't think they actually had a new SOC in 2019 vs the previous year. I forget. I can't honestly think where else LG could improve beyond processing and adding HDR10+ support (which still seems unlikely, but stranger things have happened). 'Filmmaker Mode' will probably be one picture mode we hear frequently next week (it disables all the usual crap, presumably locking certain remote/menu options out entirely). LG, Panasonic and VIZIO are known to be supporting the initiative, which was backed by 140 directors/cinematographers last year.

Hard to believe there wasn’t a thread about this game yet. While I’ve been home on vacation over the holidays, I finally decided to dive into the ultimate Battle Royale Tetris game that I’ve heard so much about. I don’t typically do online multiplayer games, but I’ve been enjoying the hell out of Tetris Effect on PS4 all throughout 2019, and wanted to play a variation of it. Amazingly, I think I actually really like it? I’ve been playing it nearly non-stop ever since I started a few days ago. I have yet to win a round, but I did manage to get second in one match. I might have won too if I hadn’t panicked and fucked up. I love the fact that once you’re knocked out of a match, you can immediately jump into another and keep playing. And since you don’t have listen to any asshat jerk-offs talking, it feels less like you’re playing with other people and more like you’re playing with really good bots. That said, I was surprised to discover that my biggest enemy in this game is the Switch Pro Controller’s crappy D-pad. I can’t tell you how many times it’s screwed me over. I’ll be moving a Tetromino left or right, and because my thumb just ever so slightly presses the upper part left or right buttons, the game thinks I want to instantly drop a piece, and SLAM! It lands in the absolute worst place imaginable. Worse, I may drop several pieces like this because I don’t realize I’m doing it until a second or two later. I’ve gotten better at not doing this, but I feel like I have to be extra careful about how I press the button, which slows me down. And in a game where completing lines quickly is paramount, that makes it harder to win. Still, this is a very good game, and it’s been fun listening to my oldest boy hum the Tetris theme the past couple days because of it.

Lord knows Corey isn't always the most discreet member of the Sony team as seen here from his talk at GDC last year (click video to jump to the relevant bit).

We actually pulled out a win from the jaws of defeat - focusing on key villians, and getting lucky with creatures coming up, helped out. Onto box 2!

Looks like the marvel D+ shows are going to start earlier then announced. They released a video showing stuff coming in 2020 and Wandavision was on it, and that was supposed to be right before Dr Strange came out in 2021z Which means Falcon and Winter solider will be out earlier then Fall as its almost wrapped filming.

I love how disruptive TCL is with their performance/price ratio. 75inch for $3k and it’s mini-LED.

So, Microcenter made me a deal that I just couldn't refuse. https://www.microcenter.com/product/604738/g433-gaming-desktop-pc There was an open box available for $1300. And they now have their own credit card, so got another 5% off. After adding a Toshiba 7200 rpm 4TB HDD, it was about $1443 all together. I think the HDD may take all night to format.
