I think that is exactly what Sony has become at the moment. I kind of lament the loss of that side of Sony, but as long as they are still willing to fund those type titles and I get to play them, I guess it’s not bad, just a different way of doing things.

As for the article, it seems very much a click bait. I’ll admit I’m stupid when it comes to this stuff, but it doesn’t sound like anything that isn’t just mostly normal business, yet it seems framed in a way to make it sound very negative.

But isn't the point that Sony has taken things off the menu?  I get that Japan Studios wasn't exactly churning out one barnstormer after another, but that I had games like Puppeteer and Gravity Rush to look forward to was a big part of what invested me in the PlayStation ecosystem.  Sure, they could farm that out to an external developer, spin up a new team, or fund a unique IP that's equally/more compelling, but it doesn't seem like that's where Sony's attention is focused.

I think at least some of your concerns are a conflict between the way Jason approaches longform articles vs. Bloomberg's style guide/approach.  His best pieces on Kotaku, such as the Anthem post-mortem, could never exist on Bloomberg because (1) they have a semi-hard cap of 2,000 words and would prefer to come in well under that and (2) they aren't a publisher oriented strictly towards gaming enthusiasts.  Trying to appeal to both a business-oriented crowd that isn't necessarily gaming-savvy as well as the ResetERA-ists/LCVG-ers of the world with a limited word count means no one's really going to be served as well as they ought to be.

I was really let down by Jason's "what went wrong with Cyberpunk 2077" piece on Bloomberg, but that's in part because a good bit of the detail, color, and corraboration he'd originally included were gutted during editing (and tweeted out instead), thanks to length constraints and targeting the business audience.

As for your notes, there are certainly some I agree with.  No question that the T1X team didn't sufficiently justify  its existence.  I would feel more of an emotional connection if they'd put together some incredible, inventive new ideas that they were wildly enthusiastic about, only for Sony to give them the cold shoulder.  But "we want to remake Uncharted or The Last of Us" doesn't really jibe with the idea of "talented creatives wanting to spread their wings", at least to my mind.  And the Dreams/Roblox comparison is obviously absurd.

But I don't think Jason's punching up at Sony because it's the thing to do.  He was one of the most vocal defenders I'd seen of the PS5 hardware/dev tools last year when Twitter was in a panic over how much more capable the Xbox Series X looked to be, for instance.

I personally don't take issue with what he said about Game Pass, and I don't see how it suggests that Microsoft isn't spending on AAA.  The point is that Game Pass needs AAA, it needs AA, it needs oddball indies, and Microsoft is building a massive portfolio of studios and striking relationships to support that.  At least when it comes to their internal studios, Sony is concentrating on a smaller release slate but one populated exclusively (or almost exclusively) by colossal blockbusters.  (With caveats like the fact that Sony is building up Media Molecule.)  It's a Netflix vs. the multiplex approach.  One isn't inherently better than the other.  There's little to suggest that this is a terrible misfire on Sony's part.  And Sony is obviously still putting their money towards external developers making smaller/more experimental titles exclusively (or with temporary exclusivity) for them.

Are people complaining about choice?  Anecdotally, but yeah, I've seen a bunch of complaints on the forums I read about Sony's line-up of cinematic third-person open world/wide linear games.  And I don't think Jason is saying that Sony cannot accomodate both exclusive blockbusters and niche teams/studios, but it's hard to argue that there's a wealth of evidence that internal niche teams/studios are still important to Sony.  Media Molecule and Team Asobi are getting some love, to be sure, but it seems like everything that's not a dead certain multi-million seller is coming from external studios.  What am I overlooking?

As for the kerfuffle over The Last of Us being remade, whatever.  I'm not aghast.  I think it's about the most boring, least interesting thing they could've chosen to direct resources towards -- selling the same game for the third generation running -- but I can't claim to be upset or anything.

I think my absolute favorite reaction is the seeming vitriol from the general internet about a possible Last of Us Remake.

"WHY? It's only 8 years old!"

"That's just stupid. Why would they do that?"

    "That's super dumb."

    "Last of Us Remake...LMAO"

Thank god some of these people don't run a business.

A publisher looks to produce a remake for an IP of significant value to likely coincide with the release of an HBO show that will expose said IP to a whole new audience.

    Gamers: "Well that's just dumb!"

Getting quotes from disgruntled employees and then implying that their narrative is corroborated because some Sony execs wouldn't comment isn't research. It's narrative and agenda building and it's just what he does.

I'm sorry but that just sounds like a team that didn't justify its existence and didn't self advocate in a competitive environment for funding.

This is insanely misleading and disingenuous, and it implies that Microsoft isn't spending on AAA.

Where's the causality and corroboration? If he's saying Sony cannot do both, then he needs to back that up.

Also ... what is "less choice"? Less choice of what? Based on what research or signals? Are people complaining about choice? Honestly asking, but the fact that this isn't included leads me to believe that it's conjecture to conveniently wrap up that paragraph.

Wow. So Sony "may have missed out on a Roblox" because it didn't market Dreams enough, a game that is objectively hard to grok. Blame the marketing, because clearly the product / movie / album / etc was great, right? Lazy.

Yeah. I'm sorry but this whole thing reads like Mumbauer's resume-saver, and Jason is just playing along because it's cool to punch up at Sony.

To run the story and not have ANY research on numbers - how did the units move despite the lack of marketing? What were the relative budgets? Were deadlines missed? Did he ask ANYONE about T1X and Mumbauer who might corroborate or contradict this narrative?

Also, the fact that there's not a single mention of the PlayStation Indies Initiative is pretty negligent.

I did it for a while, got addicted, and weaned myself off of it. The gamification is great for some people, for me it ruined my rides. I even wrote about it a long time ago: https://www.engadget.com/2013-10-24-the-connected-cyclist-dilemma.html

Yes, Maneater caused me some slight pain as well (until i discovered I didn't need to mash it as much as I was).

More games should include intensity adjustments for the haptics, as COD does.

The entire honeybee sequence was changed from a brothel to a VIP nightclub in the remake and the dance number replaced the inferred orgy I posted above and the rest of the stuff that happens in the Honeybee for the remake.

Manual or not doesn’t matter in so far as cloud saves are concerned....unless you never manually saved prior to this issue at which point...yeah they likely won’t matter.

If you have the system set to move your saves to the cloud, they will automatically do so. That’s what bit Daniel in the bum with Days Gone - his system wasn’t set to do so.  Go into the system settings, save games and look in cloud storage to see what’s there. Can’t hurt to do so.
