Romier S
Socom is finally coming to the Playstation 3! Sony made the announcement at thier Gamer's Day conference and there is even a trailer for the game making the rounds. Here's the high def version: http://www.gametrailers.com/downloadnew.php?id=19604 It reminds me quite a bit of Ghost Recon multiplayer. I'm interested to say the least. Hopefully Zipper "borrowed" Insomniac's matchmaking from Resistance.:tu Some more info at Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6170923.html?action=convert&om_clk=latestnews&tag=latestnews;title;3 Luisi explained that the goal of Confrontation was to create "the ultimate SOCOM online experience," and to that end, the game will only be playable online. What's more, the game will actually be purchasable online, as Sony plans to make it available through the PlayStation Network, as well as through traditional retail outlets. Finally, Luisi said the game would be supported long after its release with regular downloadable theme packs for sale through the PlayStation Store. While he wasn't specific, he did say the packs would include new modes, special forces, customization options, and weapons.
GunnerX
Is the new trend to totally get rid of first player missions and just go for multi player?
Josh
Is the new trend to totally get rid of first player missions and just go for multi player? I think the trend we're seeing is that multiplayer-focused games should just focus on that and single-player games should just do what they do best. I think it's a good thing in the end, outside of obvious exceptions like sports games, racing games, etc. Very few games have the budgets or resources these days to do both well (i.e. Resistance, Halo). Camp
I think the trend we're seeing is that multiplayer-focused games should just focus on that and single-player games should just do what they do best. That's certainly one way to look at it -and I agree to a point. However, I'll take the cynical approach and say that Sony knows they need something, anything on the market as fast as possible. There was no way a "real" Socom game could get finished this year so they threw this together. Not that that is bad, BTW. I want stuff on my PS3 now so I'm cool with it as long as the game is fun. Socom, on the other hand, that's bad. It kind of has the reputation as "the online shooter for people who don't know better."
GunnerX
I guess what needs to be clarified is what their definition of "Multi-Player" is. For example, being able to play co-op missions or campaign online like GoW or R6V. If this is included, then it makes sense. However, if all that is included are death match/team/ctf/etc. Then to me it would feel incomplete. I would hope this would be reflected in the price. However, by the look of things, it seems to be full price based on how much ebgames.com is charging for Warhawk pre-order.
Josh
Socom, on the other hand, that's bad. It kind of has the reputation as "the online shooter for people who don't know better." Never heard that one before outside of Counterstrike and GR fanboy circles, but whatev. SOCOM's a fun one, and the reason for a lot of us early LCVG'ers coming together. Now that I think about it, we don't, in fact, know better.
Romier S
SOCOM's a fun one, and the reason for a lot of us early LCVG'ers coming together. I still have fond memories of the original Socom. One of the earliest and more enjoyable online experiences on a console. Mind you the PC shooters of yore put the game to shame but it still provided a great deal of fun. The clan matches especially. That having been said, the sequels never quite captured the fun of the original IMO. I tried Socom 2 and 3 was left very unimpressed with both. I'm certainly hoping this game comes off a bit better. I'm definitely getting a Ghost Recon vibe which I'm a bit ambivalent about (I might as well just play Ghost Recon etc.).
GrumpyElf
Considering the fact that I met most of the LCVG people on HTF playing Socom 1... I'd say I'm very interested. We did play 2 quite a bit, but it died fast, and I'm not sure if 1 was that much better then 2 or 3, or GR, or anything else we played, but it was the 1st that all of us really got to know each other on, so I think sentimental fondness may cloud my judgement of the ones that have come and gone... Either way, I'm looking forward to it! Tom
Covak
I dunno what the game plays like, but that trailer is friggin terrible.
MrJames
I remember we made it to the sweet sixteen in the first Sony tournament before getting destroyed by cheaters.
EnemaEms
Yes we did James. The Sony tourney spawned the 'Face Paster" tag. I am very interested in this. No vehicles is going to be great. I actually enjoyed SOCOM more on the PSP because of this. As far as EB's pricing goes. They have to put something there. As far as I know, no pricing has been announced for Warhawk or SOCOM yet. -Dean-
Gary P
[Random Guy]We pasted you guys on that last map[/Guy] [Dean]Like I pasted your girlfriends face last night? Tell her Dean sends his love[/Dean] And thus a new term was coined, right then and there. Comedy gold, Jerry.
kelley
Yeah there was no possible way those guys were not cheating, they would be up in our base 5 seconds after the map started. What good times we had.
Calvin
Don't get me started on that match.Fucking dancing, ice skating bastards! (No,I don't have any bad feelings...) Anyways,SOCOM 1 was one hell of an experience,& some really good times at that.If the game is good,& we get a bunch of the old crew playing, maybe this will be the reason to get a PS3. A nice price drop wouldn't hurt either...

Covak
This one line from 1up's recent preview got me interested... "The audio will follow paths through the environment." If they're actually doing cool new things with audio I may have to pick it up just to listen to it
EnemaEms
Covak, SOCOM is huge on clan support as well, not sure if that interests you at all. -Dean-
dogbert
Here's a screenshot previewing the new "online profile" players will have for SOCOM Confrontation. And here's an annotated version. Love the "hit detection" image that visually shows your accuracy for different weapons!

Romier S
Me likey! This will be the first Socom I buy since the original game!
exile
Question: Does Socom use the one death and you sit standby(like Counterstrike) until the map is over or will it allow you to respawn(like Halo 3)? The reason I ask is because I hate the former
Orpheus
There were modes for both. It's probably just nostalgia kicking in for the original, but I'd sure love to have a good SOCOM game again. Online only is fine by me, it's the only part that I really cared about anyways.
EnemaEms
I firmly believe this is the next system mover for Sony. SOCOM is a huge franchise for them, and to have a proper Next-Gen update to the series will get a lot of people to upgrade to PS3. The game is looking to be coming along nicely. Personally, I cannot wait for it. -Dean-
Christopher
... and to have a proper Next-Gen update to the series will get a lot of people to upgrade to PS3. Judging by what GTA IV did for the PS3 (& the 360) I think the only thing that will move systems in larger numbers right now is a price drop. I think the people looking for a good shooter already have enough excuses to buy a PS3 (Resistance, COD4, MGS4). That said, I too am looking forward to this game and SOCOM will sell good numbers, just to existing PS3 owners.
Paul
I don't think it is possible for a game to be a system mover without a single player mode. That said, really looking forward to this.
