Almost six months after launch the Wii continues to steadily move hardware at retail. Supply constraints are finally normalizing but we're still not seeing Wii consoles in plentiful supply. The Nintendo DS...well why even say anything at this point? It's unstoppable. Xbox 360 numbers have shown a sharp decline compared to April '06 down to 174k units compared to 295k last year. No Elite sales breakdown as of yet, but next months numbers should be interesting since we'll see how the release of the Elite has affected 360 sales (My opinion? Very little). On the other side of the technological fence, Sony just can't be happy right now. A measly 82k Playstation 3's moved off of store shelves in April. I'm tired of saying this but the system needs a price drop and it needs it yesterday. You got rid of the wrong SKU Sony. The PSP didn't fare much better (at least as far as moving units over last month) as it only showed a slight 3k increase from last month despite a price cut down to $169.99 in early April. Despite that the system sold pretty well this month so it's not all doom and gloom for Sony's handheld. The shining ray of light though is the Playstation 2 which continues to be Sony's "rock". Expect a price drop down to $99 dollars for Sony's legacy hardware sometime this year which will no doubt push sales further through the roof. Sofware wise there isn't much to say: Nintendo/Pokemon owns the world. Spiderman 3 got off to an early start with some very strong numbers when you consider the game didn't officially street until May 4th! Expect Spiderman 3 numbers to be through the roof next month. GreenMonkey
Damn. I said it when they announced the price and I'll say it again: PlayStation 3DO Yup And people are going to insist that sales are going to go up when some killer games arrive. I doubt it. Sales will go up when the price drops. The price is simply too high for your average American.
Paul
Yup And people are going to insist that sales are going to go up when some killer games arrive. I doubt it. Sales will go up when the price drops. The price is simply too high for your average American. I do not see how Sony can lower the PS3 price enough to get those sales up. Even at $200 cheaper with a great lineup of games, 360 sales have steadily declined compared to last year. While we can still say it is early, each new month looks like both MS and Sony have overestimated the demand for next gen gaming and the cost associated with it. foogledricks
The future of the PS3 is a tough nut to crack. The 360 will have a clearer picture after this Xmas. I mean, if GTA/Halo 3 and a price drop doesn't set the 360 on fire, nothing will.

Angry the Clown
Brilliant. It's not often I am genuinely left laughing out loud seeing something online, but that sits amongst the exceptions.
Lutter
Weird that Diamond outsold Pearl by almost 350k copies! I had a dream last night that there was a price drop of the 60GB PS3 to $449.99 and I happily bought one, perhaps a sign? I think one thing that Sony is not considering that is totally going to slump their summer numbers: the price of gasoline. "Oh, I can afford that trip if I put off buying the PS3. I already own a Wii anyways!" I mean... I make a sizable income compared to a lot of people and $600 is still, well, $600! That's like 10 full-priced 360 games PS3DO indeed

Lutter
LOL. I didn't even notice that the PS3 lost to the 32 bit game boy advance. That's hilarious. By the way, who the FUCK is buying all these Gameboy Advances? I haven't seen anyone playing one since DS came out. And speaking of DS... at the rate it is selling, how long till every man, woman, and child in the US owns one?
Union Carbine
If Sony dropped the price on the PS3 by $200, I'd get one. At $600, there's just nothing compelling enough to me to overcome the sticker price.

I'm sure a lot of those belong to parents that can't afford the DS and its game prices; or casual/cheap gamers that don't want to pay current-gen prices. Instead they grab the cheap GBA and stock up on dirt cheap games. Same thing is going on with the PS2 these days. BTW: I saw non-super bright GBAs on clearance at Target for like $40 a while back. Maybe some of the sale traffic is the old ones on clearance.
GunnerX
Wal Mart! I still see a lot of people getting the GBA for their kids at WM.
General Zot
Sony was envious of the money suck headache Xbox faced last gen, so they made one for themselves. Jeez, that's worse than I would have thought by now. If those numbers hold through the year, PS3 is DOA this xmas. Xbox 360 will get a nice bump from Halo 3 and GTA 4 no matter what, and the Wii is just on fire. But Sony better figure this crap out ASAP. They are slipping into a disaster that makes the Titanic look cute by comparison. I guess we won't be hearing from Josh in this thread? JoeyN
The best selling title for the month on the PS3 was Fear with a little less then 46,000 copies. IGN posted the following lists from the NPD, but no exact numbers except for Fear Top PS3 games last month F.E.A.R. (Sierra) Motorstorm (Sony Computer Entertainment) Spider-Man 3: Collector's Edition (Activision) Resistance: Fall of Man (Sony Computer Entertainment) Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Bethesda) Spider-Man 3 (Activision) Major League Baseball 2K7 (2K Games) The Godfather: The Don's Edition (Electronic Arts) Virtua Fighter 5 (SEGA) Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent ( Top 360 games Guitar Hero 2 (Activision) Spider-Man 3 (Activision) Major League Baseball 2K7 (2K Games) Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 (Ubisoft) Gears of War (Microsoft) Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas (Ubisoft) Crackdown (Microsoft) Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Bethesda) Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (Capcom) DDR Universe Bundle (Konami)
Union Carbine
I think if Sony can get the price down, there are still a metric ton of Sony fans who will jump on at that lower price who couldn't or wouldn't drop the money now.
General Zot
Everybody loves a winner. Once that winner is down? Not always so much. A few months of sub-100k PS3 sales vs. 500k+ Wii sales and the perception on the street will be "sony is teh d00med". Whether that is true or not, the loss of hype can be staggering for a console no matter what improvements are made later. If they could get it down another $200 I would think seriously about buying one. Until then, probably not. But that could be 2 years away! If I'm even close to a typical gamer in that respect, that's an awful long wait for PS3 to get a solid install base. It's not doomed, but those numbers are bad, bad, bad.
