Bruce B
Those types of movies always make huge money. Kids want to see it, and parents go with them who wouldnt normally go.

Angry the Clown
Bad for humanity, but it's probably a good thing for Dreamworks as with Pirates opening a week later Shrek will likely be obliterated off the radar and forgotten about quickly enough (and Hollywood can start touching its private parts over Pirates box office figures beating those of Spider-Man 3's opening). Universal tipped the balance of bad Hollywood vs good Hollywood this week in setting up that deal for a bunch of films from Cuaron, Gonzalez Inarritu and Del Toro however (see Romier’s thread). So long as decisions like that keep being made to counteract the dozen more Shrek movies that are sure to be made it'll be ok.
Parrish
I really don't understand folks' disdain for movie reviews. When you have a resource like Rotten Tomatoes available, why wouldn't you want to take advantage of it?

General Zot
Kids don't listen to the crtitics, therefore parents don't get to listen to them either. I've got two boys dying to see Shrek 3. So if our whole crew goes that's 4 ticket sales. Compare that to Spidey 3 that the wife and I saw alone (2 sales.) So even though we don't care about Shrek, we still buy twice as many tickets. I'd rather give my $ to Pixar, but about twice a year you have to capitulate and see whatever hunk of celluloid crud they hoist on your brood. GreenMonkey
A heck of a lot of 'average people' don't trust critics. addendum: ...because they like predictable movies with big stars or shit blowing up and predictable stories. I never liked Shrek that much. The first one was OK but I didn't get why everyone went apeshit over it.
MastaRedSnappa
Blockbuster movies like Shrek 3/Spider-Man 3/Pirates 3 are critic-proof. The reviews could be the worst ever and it simply will not matter on the first few weekends of these movies' releases. Whether the movie has legs to continue beyond that is dependent on it being good enough to generate word of mouth and spur repeat viewings. Critical praise/derision really only matters on smaller films and/or Oscar contenders.
Jordan_E
The first one was OK but I didn't get why everyone went apeshit over it. Having kids changes everything! I mean, dang, I actually watch Jakers! with my daughter because it makes me laugh dang near every time! Besides, sitting through something like Shrek 3 to make memories for my daughter is worth every second.
Ricky G
Besides, sitting through something like Shrek 3 to make memories for my daughter is worth every second. Exactly! Watching Shrek with my 5 year old little man is great fun for him and me. He laughs, I laugh - and we bond over silly humor. The same scenes get us every time. GreenMonkey
My wife did say she and our 16-month old watched Shrek the other day near bedtime and she patiently sat and watched most of it with her (normally she's running around like crazy). The only stuff she is willing to watch for more than 15-20 minutes are CG animated movies or the occasional Miyazaki aniimation. Most normal animation she gets bored with, but she'll watch Cars or Toy Story or Shrek.
