Dimness
http://www.twitchguru.com/2007/05/15/game_addiction/ This is an interesting opinion piece/article to say the least. I've already stated my opinion in their forums, but I'll quickly summarize them here. I do believe that gaming addiction exists, and it does so among the same lines concerning other addictions. I think games are intentionally made to be addictive, no matter what euphamisms somebody might like to use to avoid the connotations of addiction. But where my opinion differs from the article writer and the person they interviewed is responsibility. I'm a personal responsibility advocate, and I feel that the gaming companies have neither responsibility nor obligation towards their gamers as far as addiction is concerned. I think it's a good thing when companies put out programs, but not obligatory nor necessary. Your thoughts?
GreenMonkey
I don't really buy addictions to things that aren't being dumped into your body (I.E. physically addictive). If it wasn't video games it would be gambling or collecting coke glasses or antiques or something else. I take this as a symptom of an addictive personality. If it wasn't games it would be some other pychological addiction IMO. BTW: I have this viewpoint being married to someone with a personality that tends to addictive behavior and is in therapy basically because of it. I saw her hop from addiction to addiction. Cyberwoo
That pretty much sums up my thoughts. I have somewhat of an addictive personality and this is why I make a conscious effort to not keep any alcohol in my home. I know there is a good chance I would probably abuse it at some point so I dont take that risk. Anyway I'm so sick of people who dont take responsability for their actions always blaming someone or something. I know I could easily let me gaming hobby consume way too much of my time and energy if I let it. This is why I try to limit myself on how many games I buy and how long I play them. I made kind of a rule to myself that I shouldn't be playing games during the day when I should be doing more productive things. However when darkness falls its game on. The way I see it is if I wasn't playing video games at night what else would I be doing on a Sunday-Tuesday evening? Those are my days off and I work a graveyard shift so I'm usually up til 2am or so. If I wasn't gaming I'd probably be out doing things I shouldn't be doing. fighting fish
I totally agree that it is about personal responsibility. Game companies aren't responsible for how many games I play, just like TV executives aren't responsible for how much TV I watch, cigarette companies aren't responsible for how much I smoke, and alcohol companies aren't responsible for how much I drink. It's my resonsibility to set my own limits. Have I mentioned that I have an addictive personality
