kelley
Activision has announced the first details of Guitar Hero III, set to be released on pretty much everything: • Paint It Black (by The Rolling Stones) • Cherub Rock (by Smashing Pumpkins) • Sabotage (by Beastie Boys) • The Metal (by Tenacious D) • My Name is Jonas (by Weezer) • Knights of Cydonia (by Muse) • Rock And Roll All Nite (as made famous by Kiss) • School’s Out (as made famous by Alice Cooper) • Slow Ride (as made famous by Fog Hat) • Cult of Personality (by Living Colour) • Barracuda (as made famous by Heart) Activision is laying out the big bucks and trying to get as many master tracks as they can, majority of that list is master tracks. Also in this new version is wireless guitars and a deal with Gibson for Les Paul guitars. Venues this time around are set to include famous historic rock venues. Look for it this fall. Graeme
That's a pretty good list I must say. I know every single one of those songs except for The Metal (not a huge D fan). I made an audible gasp when I saw Knights of Cydonia. I freaking LOVE that song, and never ever even considered Muse to appear in one of these games. My Name is Jonas also gets a big :tu Bit more info: The company also confirmed that the game would be getting two new controllers--a Gibson Les Paul guitar model for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii consoles, and a Gibson Kramer guitar for the PlayStation 2. Both controllers will be wireless. The new game will also get a host of new features, including a "multiplayer action-inspired battle mode," and authentic rock venues. An expanded online multiplayer mode will allow gamers to compete with other guitar heroes worldwide.
kelley
I was thrilled to see Cherub Rock actually by the Pumpkins on that list! I was let down that Alice Cooper didn't let them use his master track for School's Out but its one of those songs that every GH I've scratched my head and said why the hell isn't that on there. Baiter
Venues this time around are set to include famous historic rock venues. This sounds really cool, but I've been to most of the popular venues in the NY/Philly area and few offer much distinction. The wireless quitar is what I'm most looking forward to in the next installment. :slayer It's a great game, and I don't see them improving upon the formula much. EnemaEms
I think I am going to hold out on buying another guitar and just get the combo with the wireless guitar once this hits. I can't believe they got Sabotage on this. Makes me want to listen to that report on lilacs, or whatever flower it was about. -Dean-
secretvampire
Very nice song list on #3. I haven't bought number 2 yet but was never a huge fan of the tracklist except for a few songs. This one looks a lot closer to the first one in terms of variety and songs I actually care about.
fighting fish
Boy, between this and 80's edition, I'm going to be playing a LOT of guitar this year.
Tonner Cyn
This was pretty much a no-brainer for me but that partial song list just adds to my anticipation. I was going to be content to get just the game, but a wireless controller (which would also be my second) might just be enough to get me to shell out for the full package. Now if only we could get confirmation that Rock the 80s is coming to the 360...
Graeme
I just listened to D's The Metal. It's got an awesome riff in it, that will be really fun to play (and probably pretty damn hard on Hard and Expert). I think this is now my most looked forward to game this year.... until we get more info on Rock Band anyway. It's gonna be a fake guitar playing kinda christmas! Tonner Cyn
I wonder if this will be as difficult as GH2 or if they go for some sort of medium between GH1 and 2. It is a bit interesting that they are putting this info out so early. I figure we still have 6 months or so before the game comes out, right? Robot Monkey
This sounds really cool, but I've been to most of the popular venues in the NY/Philly area and few offer much distinction. The Tower!
Baiter
The Tower! That was actually the only theater I could think of that would be easily recognizable from the stage. :tu Saw Primus there about 10 years ago. :slayer CBGB's is a place I never got to enjoy that probably has a lot of distinction, but I just checked and it looks like they've close shop. I saw Megadeth there a while ago (early nineties) and it was awesome. Love the size. An employee is seeing Jim Gaffigan there, so I'll find out how it's holding up these days. ChrisBardon
That list is a great start! The only thing I'm not sure of at this point is compatibility of the GH3 controller with GH2. I'm planning on just buying another bundle when GH3 comes out, and I'd hope that this means I can use my GH2 controller for GH3 co-op, and vice versa... EnemaEms
The controller is the same. Just a new shape. -Dean-
dogbert
The controller is the same. Just a new shape. They're reputedly changing button colour/shape too on the GH3 guitars without any functional change.
Magness
Definitely looking forward to this and Rock Band... Will be one Hell of a year for music/rhythm games
dogbert
Big hands-on preview from IGN... Talks about the changes to the guitar - changable face plats & buttons, the new shape etc, and lots about the game. They've already ditched the licenced venue idea discussed above. Since Harmonix is now owned by MTV and hard at work on Rock Band, Neversoft wasn't given access to the code from previous Guitar Hero games. That means Guitar Hero III is being built from the ground up. Even so, the basic gameplay is identical so the learning curve should be nonexistent. When we first jacked in ready to rock, we were met with instant failure. With Neversoft and RedOctane folks all around, awkwardness abounded. You see, the timing window for when you can hit a note is not quite the same as Guitar Hero I and II. Not to worry. Neversoft is bringing in testers regularly to get their opinion on timing (amongst other things) and are constantly adjusting the window to nail the sweet spot. Even without being used to the timing on this early build, it only took about 2 minutes before we were ripping out fast licks with precision. kelley
I wonder why Activision was so dumb as to not buy out the code from the games.
dogbert
Who says it was for sale? And at the end of the day, for the long run it may be better to rewrite - Neversoft will do a far better job in the long run supporting it if they use their own codebase as opposed to hacking around someone else's. ChrisBardon
First of all, the wireless Xbox 360 controller will work with Guitar Hero II. The wired controller, if you have one already, will work with Guitar Hero III. Don't worry about being forced to double dip. Figured that this would be the case, but it's nice to see the confirmation
Graeme
I'm not a fan of the black buttons. I hope they change it back. It doesn't help make it look any less of a toy.
Covak
Ouu, I actually like those buttons. I really like the whole look of that controller, and the thought of playing it without wires is pretty tasty. Online co-op career mode is going to get a friend or two to buy a 360, I'd guess Man, if I only get one of those it'll be my 6th Guitar Hero controller. Rainmaykr
Jimi Hendrix without his signature Stratocaster is a bit... wrong. What do they think this is, an arcade game and not a sim? Bring on that wireless controller yesterday!
Tonner Cyn
IGN had two more songs to announce. The unknown one (to me at least) is Lay Down by Priestess. The big song is Evenflow by Pearl Jam. Sounds like fun!
