Help this noob with an Xbox purchase

Recommended Posts

Well It looks like I'll be joining the Xbox world but I guess not until Christmas..:(

So at that point I'll need more than just an Xbox to get started.

What do you recommend I get to get started?

Based on reading I'm thinking about:

Live Kit

Extra Controller

Hi Def av pack(has cables right?)

Optical cable(or can I buy one at the A/V store for this purpose?)

Then games..

Since you guys don't know me and what I like I guess I should describe what I like..

Sports(all of them)

FPS's

Platformer type games.

So what should I start out with first as I'm looking for games to keep me busy(aka bang for my buck!) but also keep in mind I won't be picking any up until Christmas time..

Thinking for sure:

NFL 2k4(definitely)

Links 2004

Top Spin(maybe)

After that I'm thinking:

KOTOR

Halo(or wait for halo 2?)

GR:IT or RSix 3?

What else should I consider? I'm trusting you guys(that's good right?) :lmfao:

Thanks in advance.

Halo is a must buy - though look for a sale or maybe preowned. This way you can start to prepare for Halo 2.

Many of us are buying both Rainbow Six 3 & CounterStrike over the next few weeks. You should consider one of those.

KOTOR is awesome!

For platformers & the like - Both Lord of the Rings games will be out (the EA ones). TTT is great, & ROTK is looking mighty fine. I also recently tried Voodoo Vince - you might want to give that a spin.

As for cables, I think that the Hi-Def pack does come with them - but it has been a while, so I'm not positive. I would check to be sure.As for the optical cable - I'm pretty sure you need to buy that seperately,so any A/V store will do.

ESPN NFL Football/2K4 is great! I'm sure some others will come up with ideas for you.

Hope this helps a bit...

The high-def pack does comes with cables, but you'll need to purchase a standard optical cable seperately.

Game-wise, I'd suggest RS3 over Ghost Recon or GRIT because that's likely to be the flavor of the month by then. The current flavor is Crimson Skies. Also, doesn't PGR2 come out this holiday season?

The Xbox library is weak in platformers, but Voodoo Vince seems like a fun little game -- and you can probably find it used by Christmas.

And if you have a dog, keep him or her away from your voice communicator...

Exile,

It sounds like you're good to go on the kind of package you want. I'd be sure the second controller you pick up is the 'Controller-S,' the smaller and more comfortable official joypad MS released.

I'm not overly clued in on sports titles sadly. If you include driving titles in the Sports category though, read up on the forthcoming release of Project Gotham Racing 2. It's looking stunning and is fully Live enabled. The X-box is still rather lacking in decent platform titles, but you could check out Rayman 3 which is a beautiful and charming little platformer.

One of the big FPS games of this winter is going to be XIII, which is looking downright lovely. The PC demo you can get online is a lot of fun and really shows the title to be shaping up well. Not only should this satisfy your FPS craving, but it will also be a Live enabled title allowing you to make good use of your Live Starter Kit purchase.

Halo is a tough one. If you can find it for a good price, I'd say it's a title no X-Box owner should be without. It's worth its retail price mind you, but with the sequel looming, I'd say the cheaper you can find the first one, the better.

Game wise at the moment Pick up Crimson Skies, ESPN football and Rainbow Six/Top Spin come out next week.

Some older live games to consider are Wolfenstein and Mech Assault (still a ton of fun)

As for offline games definatly pick up KOTR and Splinter Cell

One thing you need to be aware of, if not already. EA does not (as of right now) support any LIVE games. So for LOTRs type games you might want to look at the ps2 since the ROTK is supposed to include some online features.

Also if you are on a budget remember to look at the platinum games I am sure you can find a few to your liking.

Xbox Platinum Hits

I had some fun with max payne and silent hill 2.

[edit]Halo is a MUST..!!..!..[/edit]

Hope this helps and happy gaming.

If you get on LIVE be sure to pass along you TAG. :green:

If you can find a Live kit with Tetris as one of the included games, this is a great title that a few of us play regularly. It's also available as a stand-alone $20 title.

Or,you can get the latest Xbox bundle (for the holidays) comes with two games:

Star Wars:The Clone Wars & Tetris Worlds Live - also a free two-month tryout of Xbox Live.

All for $179. Not too shabby!

Sports: Sega's 2004 ESPN line so far produced three FANTASTIC sports games (hockey, basketball, football). Top Spin Tennis looks promising. Tiger Woods 2004 is awesome as well and looks gorgeous too.

FPS's: Don't wait for Halo 2. Get Halo. The storyline alone is worth the price of the game. As for Unreal Championsip, I didn't like it. Either Ghost Recon is good to buy and go online with as long as you're not playing with asshats. Rainbow Six 3 looks REALLY promising.

Platformer type games: The best one I've ever played on the XBox is Munch's Odyssee. And considering it's WAY old, you can get it for $10 to $20 if you know where to look.
