Baten Kaitos

Baten Kaitos is a Japanese RPG that is being released December 5th. It's frustrating, because while I would love to import this game, I'll have to hope for an English release, as most Japanese RPG's are WAY too difficult unless you are good with Japanese.

"Baten Kaitos (which is actually the name of a fixed star referred to by scientists as Zeta Ceti) tells the story of a planet whose inhabitants have wings. Kalas, the game's protagonist, only sports one wing and is searching for his family. From a visual standpoint, the game will offer pre-rendered 2D backgrounds and 3D character models.

The cards around which the game's battle system are centered contain an essence called Magna Essence. Cards can be obtained in battle and through exploration. Attack, defend, item, skill and all other battle commands will be related to those cards. Depending on timing and combinations, players may be able to unleash chain and certain kill techniques. By executing those combos, more than 1000 different items can be created.

At a conference held by Nintendo today, new details regarding Namco's upcoming GameCube RPG Baten Kaitos - Owaranai Tsubasa to Ushinawareta Umi were revealed. Completing the game will take about 50 hours. Players who want to do all of the available sidequests can look forward to about 70 hours of playing time. The graphics engine will produce solid 30 frames a second. Furthermore, the development team at Monolith Soft has implemented Dolby Pro Logic support.

With the camera feature, players can take pictures of enemies and sell them to raise money. Once players have acquired the Light Magnus card, they can use the device's flash as well. As previously reported, there will be more than 1000 different Magnus cards in Baten Kaitos. Last but not least, the event scenes will feature full voice acting." -from rpgfan.com

Check out the fantastic trailer for the game here.

This 'camera feature' sounds interesting. Maybe they're fans of Fatal Frame. ;) But 70 hours is a LONG game! While I would love to play this, and would buy it if it's released here, I don't know if I'd be able to finish it. At least with all the side quests.

Anyone else looking forward to this?

RPG on Cube = Pharmboy there :P.

I haven't seen much on this one so it's interesting to get a look at it at last. I'll be all over it if the reviews are good, since the Cube currently only has Skies of Arcadia in its selection for a good RPG. There's also the as-yet unnamed Camelot RPG that's supposed to be announced or come out at some point.

Personally I'm looking forward to Crystal Chronicles (maybe, depending on my GBA-ness at the time) and Tales of Symphonia. Given what I've seen of Tales that is currently my most-wanted RPG title. This new one looks good though, so thumbs up for that.

I thought this might get a response from you, Mark! ;)

I'm looking forward to Crystal Chronicles as well, though my feelings are somewhat reserved for it. I'm going to wait and see.

I've got Skies of Arcadia on backorder ($9.99!) from Best Buy. Not sure how long it's going to be, though. :( I'm sure I'll like it, because I've only heard good things about it, and never got around to playing the Dreamcast version.

And Tales of Symphonia! Yeah, I'm really looking forward to that too. I love the 3D superdeformed cell-shaded look of it. I think it's supposed to come out in April. A mere five months away....

You'll love SoA once you get it.

What he said ;). The closest any next-gen RPG has ever gotten to recapturing the magic of the SNES Final Fantasies for me. Actually, it did do that :P.

Crystal Chronicles could go either way. Man, it looks like multiplayer heaven, but having everybody get their own GBA is a pain. Those price drops at K-Mart help, for you guys, but it's still a mint up here. I still think Square was off its nut, but I understand the attempt to use the GBA for something novel.

As to the original topic, Namco's got a pretty decent record for RPGs, we just don't see them over here unfortunately. As somebody who is royally sick of Final Fantasy titles there hasn't been a lot to choose from this gen, which each system only getting a couple good ones (KOTOR, Kingdom Hearts, and Disgaea immediately spring to mind as ones that looked excellent). Bizarre when the GBA offers the best options for RPGs ;).

April is indeed our rumoured release for Symphonia. I wasn't sold on the look, but damn if it didn't really wow the socks off me when I saw it in motion.

Gooooooooooood morning Cube RPG Squad!

This morning finds us with a nice, lengthy hands-on preview of Baten Kaitos up on IGN. I love what they're doing with this game, it sounds fascinating, especially the way they're integrating the player into the game. I think it's terribly clever, but you can read for yourself ;).

Two pages to make the wait harder...

GameSpot posted this up a while back but I never got around to mentioning it :P.

You have your choice of pre-order bonuses with Baten Kaitos if you are looking to make the effort in that respect. GameStop is offering a soundtrack CD with your pre-order, while EB is giving away a wallscroll of the main characters.

I won't be taking anybody up on their offers, but ah well. This will be my last game purchase of the year, except any gifts I get from people ;). And barring any monster sales :P.

I've heard comparisons between this game and Chrono Cross, which really bodes well for my enjoyment since I absolutely LOVE Chrono Cross. Looking forward to this baby!

IGN's review of Baten Kaitos. 8.8. Not bad at all.

Baten Kaitos delivers one of the finer experiences on the GameCube. If you own the system and love RPGs, go buy this sucker just as soon as it lands on store shelves. It boasts great visuals, genuine characters and a solid, albeit somewhat unoriginal, story. The combat is fast and unique, with over 1,000 cards to form your perfect deck. The journey should last around 45 hours for the average gamer
