Amped 2

Ok Picked up Amped 2 tonight and played it a bit and so far its pretty fun. So did anyone else get this yet?

It is pretty close to the first - It can be pretty unforgiving but its the more "realistic" one so that is acceptable and it makes you more appreciative of those runs where you can do no wrong.

Controls are about the same but there is a "stylish" mode now where you do flips/spins slow and get bonus points.

I just played "Free Ride" on Live and it is pretty ingenious. You all are on the same mountain and there is a time limit set by the host. You pick which run you do on the mountain and just go - (others may have picked it too - maybe not) and when you get to the end of a run, you just pick another one and board till time is up. All the while it keeps you posted as far as your scores in relation to everyone else (pretty unobtrusively also). Also at least in Free Ride there is no lobby - you just start in the game - and you can start mid-game if there are slots available.

FYI it does support custom soundtracks while playing on live.

So what does everyone else think.

Yeah that was a little weird - to took a lot of practice to ollie and then reach over to grab. I wish they would have had pushing in the right thumbstick as an option to squat/ollie (or whatever they call it). But by the end of my session I was getting it more reliably - but I must remember to let go.

Fortunately they have the option to switch rail slides to Y like in Tony.

Just picked up this game! I don't think I'll make it online tonight, but look me up in the future for some play. Probably weekends are best, I'll be watching the NBA at nights during the weekday. Is anybody going to be online around 1:30 or 2:00 tonight? If so, I'll jump on for 1 hour or so.

Yup.

Actually, NOW I'm insane. As of this afternoon I own SSX 3 and Amped 2. I've never gone snowboarding a day in my life. Thankfully, both games are great and worth the money. SSX3 is a big hit with my wife and friends who want to pick up and play. Amped 2 is what I enjoy. The gameplay is more my style and hitting the slopes with some buddies online has proven to be good fun.

Amped 2 in 720p is absolutely gorgeous!

I stunk up the slopes late last night but plan to read the manual at work today. It has much of the same relaxed feel as MM3, only on the most beautiful slopes I have ever seen outside of the Zugspitze in Garmisch. I enjoyed talking with the guys and listening to some great music as much as the boarding, to be honest.

Mike,

I heard a song last night while we were on Milly (around 11:50 p.m. ET) that reminds me of an angry, young Clash. Any idea who it was or what the song was? I looked down a moment too late to see the title / artist. It sounded awesome!

No idea Bryan...

I was concentrating on impressing the photographers... they tell me I'm going places :green:

720p is confirmed - I had moved my Xbox component cable to my 480i / 480p input to see why Allen always spends so much time in the dashboard and got a garbled mess when I popped in Amped 2. I swapped the cable to a 480p / 720p / 1080i input and saw it in all its glory.

OK, this is getting to be too much...

For those of you that have played SSX3 and Amped 2, are the two different enough that they feel like different sports? I know that's a strange question, but in a lot of ways SSX3 is really an aerial acrobatics game as much as a snowboarding game.

Conversely, will I feel bored because of Amped's more realistic play? When you say realistic, is it Tony Hawk realistic...harder than TH or easier?

I would say it's similar to TH. The control setup is a bit different though. You use the right tumbstick for grabs, and B for grinds (I changed mine to Y like the default TH setup). Y (now my B) is used for lip tricks, and X is used during skateboarding flip tricks. The left tumbstick controls player rotation in all directions, while triggers tweak your moves and switch your stance on the ground. Landing tricks can be tough since you have complete control over rotation. Combos are possible with manual like tricks for linking, but it's tough.

I never played SSX3, but had Tricky for the Cube, and I like Amped 2 much better. My friend, however, prefers SSX3. Matter of choice.

I think Amped 2 is harder than Tony Hawk. It's much harder to land spins/flips for example. SSX is definitely the most "arcadey" of the three. I'm a big fan of the Tony Hawk series, and I'm loving the challenge of Amped 2 - there's a definite learning curve, there's a definite different approach to doing well.

Of course, I've only been playing it for a couple of hours ;)

OK, thanks for the responses. I'm very torn as I eventually got tired of TH4 when I reached the point of frustration with the trick system, if this one is more complicated (and the reviews agree with you Brian), then I will probably not get my money's worth out of this, even though I'd probably enjoy it for a few weeks.

As for the 'approach' I saw something about that specifically in the IGN review, which is actually appealing. That style counts more than quantity.

Is there a player attribute system, so your players skills improve as you attain certain milestones?

I might still do an impulse buy, I'll mull it over...maybe try to rent it. Can you tell I'm indecisive?
