dogbert
So I'm thinking of setting up a FreeNAS box as a means of centralizing my media/files etc on one easy to backup box with a solid reliable interface, rather than piggybacking off my own PC. Anyone got experience of this software? And just as importantly, any recommendations on setting up the HDs for a centralized media server (mp3s/videos/photos etc)? I'll be using an older Dell Athlon based PC that I've had sitting spare for a couple of years for FreeNAS, and I'll be setting it up afresh regardless, so now's the time to investigate using RAID etc. Any suggestions? ChrisBardon
Never tried it myself, but I'll be interested in what you find out, since I'd like to try something similar. Does FreeNAS have a built in Windows Media/ UPnP server so I can use it for streaming a media library to the 360 or ps3? I suppose I could do that via another PC, but it seems a little excessive. dogbert
FreeNAS supports uPnP, yep. I'll post more once I've started messing about & decided on hardware etc.
GreenMonkey
Let me know how it works out. I've got / will have enough parts for a spare PC around and I've always wanted to set up a NAS. I love the dedicated NAS hardware but it's always too pricey or using iffy software.
Zelex
I chose a hardware RAID solution myself. It makes recovery when you lose a drive much more pleasant. I simply just plug in a new drive and it does the rest automatically.
