Call of Duty

Call of Duty gets released today, and there hasn't been much buzz about it on this board.

I've played both the demos, and loved them. The graphics, the sound, the atmosphere - All rolled into a spectacular WW2 game. I know there's a flood of WW2 based FPSes out there, but this one is definitely worth a try.

Anyone pick it up yet?

Have it sitting on my desk at the moment. I *LOVED* the two demo's and Ive been looking forward to the game for some time. I'll be installing and playing some tonight. The single player campaign is fairly short from what I hear but so was Max Payne 2 and that didn't bother me one bit. :D

How does this game differ from BF 1942 or MOH?

Its made my a large portion of the folks that worked on Medal of Honor Allied Assault (originally 2015 employees). If you enjoyed MOHAA this will be right up your alley. Not to deteriorate into a little boy that just got candy for the first time but CoD is best described as MOHAA on crack.

It doesn't do anything original or innovative per se but much like another FPS that includes a certain master that likes to be called chief, its brings together various elements of other WWII games into a really solid and intense package.

For one, it's an amazing single player game, unlike Battlefield 1942. Although it does have AWESOME multiplayer.

It's definitely more "squad" based, but not like GR/GR:IT/RS3. In MoH, in most of the mission, if I recall correctly, you were alone. In CoD you're almost always with a squad who will help you out, bark orders out, take a bullet for you, etc. :)

Got it Saturday. Played it all day and finished it on medium difficulty. Its only about 6.5 hours long. It is really good but WAY WAY WAY WAY too short. Some of the missions go by so quickly you are surprised when it fades to black only to load the next mission.

I think the best ones are the russian missions though. The british ones second and the american ones last.

I didn't have it lock up at all. I played it for about 5 hours straight then quit and got something to eat. Then went back and finished it. I did notice some graphical glitches but never anything that crashed my system.

Win2k, 512 ram, 800Mhz P3, geforce 2 64MB card. I'm running in 800x600 with a lot of the stuff turned up.

This game is awesome, but has anyone else had problems with it locking up?

Locked on me three times. However I set the sound from 44khz down to 22khz and havent had a lock up since. From what Ive been reading the problem is attributed to the sound card drivers from Creative. There is supposedly a patch in the works. You may want to try that as a work around.

I have been playing this for the past several days and am really enjoying it. The only glitch I've seen thus far was last night - I died several times at roughly the same spot, and at the point of death, the game would slow down to a crawl. I'd get maybe one frame every couple of seconds for about 30 seconds, before I would finally just die. Kinda annoying. I quit the game after dying a few times and haven't tried playing it again since. It might be that there was just a lot going on at the spot where I kept buying the farm, or perhaps there is some sort of glitch.

Granted, I'm running it with pretty much the max settings -- 1600x1200 with all the detail jacked up. My rig seems to handle it though, with the sole exception being last night's death sequences. I'm using an AMD 2200+ with 1GB PC-2700 DDR RAM, an ATI Radeon 9800, and a Creative Audigy Platinum.

In any event, I'm in the midst of the British missions now and it's quite fun. Having your squad to back you up for most of the missions adds quite a bit of flavor to the game. I was a bit worried about the squad thing at the start - I was afraid that it would reduce my control of the game (i.e. the squad moving ahead toward objectives without me, etc). As it turned out, those concerns were mostly unfounded.

Often, your squad will wait for you to make the first move and will simply back you up. It lets one play the game at their own pace, which I appreciate. I like to take my time through most missions, making sure I wax each and every nazi I can. :) They also fight pretty intelligently (of course they do occasionally do stupid things, like the dolt last night who stepped right in front of my rifle's muzzle as I attempted to pick off a far-away German.

You find your way through the missions by checking your objectives which update as you go, as well as by following the waypoint marker which appears on your compass. All in all a nice interface. The dialogue is often witty and some of the sequences are just a hell of a lot of fun (the frenzied car ride to the American base early on in the game was particularly enjoyable).

Anyway, I would definitely recommend the game to anyone who would appreciate a solid single-player FPS in a WW2 setting. I haven't yet tried multi-player, but I will eventually. From what I've heard, the multi-player is excellent.

Nope, fairly certain that this was not a "feature". I did have that happen once, where a tank fired right across my nose and I got the whole dizzy/muted/all-screwed-up thing. That was damn cool.

This was different. This was everything simply slowing down to a crawl when I died - I could still hear sounds and such, but the graphics were near-stagnant. I saw nothing other than what I was looking at when I died - no special effects or anything. Just a frame rate of about one frame every 2-3 seconds. I was unable to stop it, get to the main menu, etc. The game was almost locked up on me. The possibility of a memory leak comes to mind - but I'm not quite technical enough to make a real assessment.

I'll try playing again tonight probably and will see if it continues to happen.
