Mad World (Wii)

I think it is destined for the bargain bin... but I'll pick it up at full price if I read some good reviews. Anyone see any yet?

Reviews are embargoed until release day, I believe. Reviewers have certainly got copies already and the buzz has been positive.

Well, Matt @ IGN liked it. 9/10.

If you judge the quality of a game based on how long it is, MadWorld might not be for you. The initial play-through only takes about five or six hours to complete, typical of a beat-'em-up. Of course, I would argue that you will have more fun in this five or six hours than you would in 20 with some lesser title. Regardless, though, there is reason to return to the experience, particularly if you are a completionist. First, you can play MadWorld on normal and hard modes. In too many games, the distinction is practically meaningless, but not so here. Consider that I died only a handful of times as I played through the game on normal mode. Now consider that I died a half dozen times as I attempted to play through the tutorial mode on hard difficulty. It's the real deal, as evidenced not only by the smarter AI for enemies, who suddenly dodge your attacks and laugh at you before fighting back, but also by the fact that you only have a single life when you start (as opposed to three) and that enemies inflict multiple times more damage with every punch. A couple of well-placed attacks and you're a goner. There's also weapon unlockables for completing the game on normal mode that can then be used when playing through on hard. And there are Death Watch game minis that become available after you have completed a stage once. There's definitely good replay value here, even if at first glance the content seems slim. And if the challenge of playing on hard isn't enough, Platinum Games has also included a two-player split-screen mode where you and a buddy can compete in the various mini-challenges, like Man Darts, from the single-player adventure. The split-screen mode sees a small framerate hit, but it is otherwise intact and still enjoyable, although I would have preferred an online cooperative option.

I realize that not everybody will find MadWorld's unique visual and aural presentation appealing, but to me, the game is an instant collector's item and a Wii showpiece, not just for its amazing style, but for its label-busting content. Anybody who says Nintendo's console is just for kids will see things very differently after a few chainsaw- induced mutilations. More importantly, though, MadWorld does not place emphasis on style over gameplay, so there's plenty of fun, smart mechanics to back up the overwhelmingly slick look and sound of the title. You'll be floored by some of the scenarios that await you in the fast-moving beat-'em-up, surprised by the unexpectedly well-made storyline, and simultaneously grossed out and cracked up by all of the completely over-the-top gore. Even with some camera issues, some repetition, and a decidedly short single-player mode (if you play it on normal difficulty), SEGA and Platinum Games have still created Wii's first truly excellent game of the year.

I'm begging you, buy this game so that we'll see more like it.

It's an interesting Looking title. The style is definetely a first, but as comments raised regarding the timing of it's release indicate - could they have picked a worse time to release the title?

I'm waiting on this one, though I really like the look of it - I have to say they're being kinda unfair to Overkill calling this the first truly excellent wii title of the year (Overkill was really solid - well, except for the gross ending :P).

I'm honestly not sure I can play this title though, the visuals look neat, but I have a feeling I'll have a hard time playing it because of them :(

Have to say the shots I've seen of it remind me of Hellboy and a few other similar comics (especially the Baron guy - can't remember the name of that inde character that he's similar to)

Sooo I picked this up at Fry's today (it's 44.99 this week on sale) and it kicks... ASS. I love it. It actually reminds me a lot of Jet Grind Radio minus skating plus extreme killing in a weird way (maybe because Professor K's voice actor is also the announcer in this game).

Makes great use of the Wii controls.

Started tucking into this today as a much needed release before my next big RPG trip.

Kicks so much ass. This game is just gore and overkill wrapped up in a very fun arcade-y shell. Sure it's mostly punchy-smashy, but with the oodles of kill variety, who gives a fuck? Why stab in the eye with a signpost when you can throw a tire on them, then stab them, then throw them into a speeding train or bounce them into a garbage bin (oh those garbage bin kills are fun).

It's insane and I doubt it sold like hotcakes, but it is the kind of game I wish we saw more of on the Wii, if only for the change of pace and good use of the Wii controls.

Indeed. I'm about halfway through and I love its use of the motion controls. It's a pure brawler. Anyone coming in expecting supposed "variety" or redefinition of the genre need not apply. What it does offer though is a world of variety in how to kill your opponents and it never gets old. The bike sequences mixes things up while the goal remains the same. The story is suprisingly interesting as well. Oh and the boss battles are both fun and just outright hilarious.:lol

I actually plan to replay some of the earlier levels again before moving on just so I can redo some of the in-level challenges. I didn't expect this to sell well so it doesn't come as a shock that it hasn't (though Sega says sales have been "encouraging"). Still, this is exactly what the Wii needs...
