Yeah so uh... Star Wars is coming to DVD

The recent Star Wars summit for industry types held by Lucasfilm this week seems to have confirmed Episode IV, V and VI for DVD in September of next year, along with a DVD of the Clone Wars Cartoon. Basically their entire strategic plans for DVD through to Episode III promotion was mapped out. Digital Bits is supporting the claim of those to have come out of this conference (which was not open to the press) though Lucasfilm have yet to issue any form of official public statement.

Lord knows what incarnation they will come in mind you.

Sad but true. I hate the revisionist garbage they've done with Star Wars over the years. That movie is a triumph of special effects from its era and they seem to have some desire to ramp it up needlessly with CGI junk. I like CGI in moderation but the point of those movies is to look at the amazing things they did without it.

I like seeing the lightsabers as hollow tubes every now and again. I love trying to find the wires. Why mess with that sort of stuff? I find CGI really takes away from using your imagination to look at things. Sigh. Rant over. I just wish they'd leave things like Star Wars alone. It's not like, for want of a better example, Doctor Who, with its pie plate flying saucers. Star Wars looks fabulous in its old format even today.

I actually wouldn't mind an SE that did light cleaning, but, this is key: The original needs to be available. Period.

And I suspect we won't be seeing that ever again from a legally published source. Which is a shame, because I won't purchase anything but the original series.

Exactly, and I don't even mind that George feels the need to release all this CGI-enhanced stuff, I really don't. But you are dead on the monkey, er money (I had to leave that in because it wasn't even a deliberate spelling error :P), we need to be able to see the original if we so choose.

Choice is good. I mean, criminy, even the Beauty & The Beast DVD has a "watch original movie" option and that's Disney we're talking about.

I agree with owning the Originals the way they were meant to be seen. That is why I'm happy to have them.

That being said - I'll end up buying these on DVD when they come out. There might be a glimmer of hope. Rumors are that the whole "Greedo shoots first" shot is now gone.

We'll have to wait & see,I guess...

/me pats both TXH laserdisc set and self-transferred (so its legal) DVD backups of same. I'm sorted, though I'd obviously appreciate some more picture quality. I see no need to mess with the films - if you watch the SE pressings (which I also have) the 1997 effects are nowhere near as good as the 1977 ones.
