I agree, I was in awe at how easy he made it look - he could have kicked Fred Savage's ass in The Wizard!

Others had mentioned (and I also seem to recall) that the second whistle would only take you as far as World 7 and not directly to World 9. Regardless of this fact, the rate at which he rocketed through the levels is plenty enough to be envious of.

I don't remember exactly how to do it, but I remember that if you had two whistles, you could get to the last level with just that. I had done it numerous times when I had the original on NES.

Haven't tried it with the All-Stars version or the GBA version though.

Not so, my friends!

Allow me to clear this mystery up for those of you with gamer amnesia ;).

If you have two warp whistles you merely do the following:

a) Blow one, get to the warp zone.

B) While IN the warp zone, blow the second whistle.

This will take you directly to the World 8 warp pipe and le voila, you're off!

Is this one legit? Because if it is' date=' it's amazing!

Mario 64 beat in 16 minutes.

What techniques/glitches is this guy using, anyway?

First of all, it's a tool-assisted run. This means using save states and repeatedly playing sections to get the best time, slow motion, and possibly recording input, editing it, then playing it back in order to automate perfect runs of difficult sections.

Most of it is actually "legit", just going for the fastest/easiest stars and using the least stars possible to advance. Some of the actual glitches used though are:

  • exploding through the fence to get the first star
  • glitching through Whomp to stomp him (I did this all the time)
  • apparently glitching through locked doors by holding a rabbit
  • glitching up through the first main staircase
  • backwards jump glitching up stairs (including the infinite staircase)

Watching him go through the bowser levels is still nothing short of amazing.
