Yes indeed. I followed much of the above during CES. Very interesting tech. We're nudging ever closer to those VR Bands from Caprica. :)

 

Am curious about the long term effects on the eyes using devices like this, however.

Everything I've read about is that fatigue is not an issue even with extended play time which is heartening. It's steroscopic 3D at the end of the day with a far wider viewing angle so fatigue was really my primary concern. With enough game/developer support though, wow. I can see this being the one "gimmick" if you well that has a real shot at having legs with the promise of future expansion...

It's more a curiosity of having computer images that close to your eyes for me.

Yep. Been following the Oculous Rift for several months. Would LOVE to try Doom 3 on it. Guess that's all that's actually using it at the moment, last I read.

 

Last vr game I ever played was that horrible pterodactyl game, back in the early 90's.

I am definitely interested.  I've been waiting for something like this for 20 years since I played with those horrible low-res VR headsets which were still kinda of awesome.  I don't give a damn what I look like sitting in my house.

I'd need to try one to be convinced. I can't focus on a screen closer than about six inches, so I don't quite get how this would work for me. Also, glasses.

Absolutely horrendous news about the death of one of Oculus VR's co-founders, Andrew Scott Reisse.
 
 

Andrew Scott Reisse, a founding member and lead engineer on the Oculus Rift VR headset project, was struck and killed by a vehicle in Santa Ana, California as its driver fled from the police.

According to an ABC report, Reisse was crossing the street when the driver, said to have been running from the scene of a shooting, ran a red light. The suspects are in custody.

For a life to end is always despairing. For it to be one of our own, crushing. For that life to end just as years of work on an incredible project began to bear its fruit is nothing short of a tragedy.

Our hearts and minds are with the family of Andrew Reisse and the entire Oculus VR team tonight.

 

An official statement from the Oculus VR team follows:

Andrew was a brilliant computer graphics engineer, an avid photographer and hiker who loved nature, a true loyal friend, and a founding member of our close-knit Oculus family.

Some of us have known Andrew since college, and have worked with him at multiple companies beginning with Scaleform in Maryland which he helped start at age 19, then at Gaikai in Aliso Viejo which brought him out to California, and finally at Oculus where he was a co-founder and lead engineer.

Andrew’s contributions span far and wide in the video game industry. His code is embedded in thousands of games played by millions of people around the world.

Words can not express how sorely he will be missed or how deeply our sympathy runs for his family

Andrew will always be in our thoughts and will never be forgotten. We love you Reisse.

Oculus Rift support in Unreal 4:

 

 

Epic Games has officially announced support for the Oculus Rift on the Unreal Engine 4. In a release today, the company announced the members of its UE4 Integrated Partners Program, a group of companies whose technology will be tightly integrated with the latest engine. Among Autodesk, Intel, Nvidia, and other big names, you'll find Oculus VR, whose virtual reality headset has captured the imagination of many gamers and developers. As Engadget points out, Epic has said before that it was working on support for the Oculus Rift. But this announcement makes it clear that Epic will be working with Oculus to make Unreal Engine 4 work as smoothly as possible on the Rift, and that there will be an ongoing relationship between the two.

Epic isn't the only big name to express interest in supporting the Rift. EA's Frank Vitz is exploring the possibility of integrating Rift support into the new Frostbite Engine, and Valve has worked on porting several of its games for the headset. John Carmack of Id Software was also an early supporter of the project. Tailoring engines for the Rift and supporting existing games is just part of the problem Oculus faces, however. The immersion and head-tracking mechanisms of the Rift often work poorly with fast-paced shooters or other games that require deft control, meaning that developers will need to think not just about how to get games running, but what kind of experiences actually work in virtual reality.

Yoshida had voiced his fondness for Oculus Rift on Twitter earlier in the year, and Engadget has quizzed him further on Sony's potential interest:

 

Sony Computer Entertainment head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida is a big Oculus Rift fan, it turns out. "We've got a couple of the development kits, and I tried it out and I love it," he told us in an interview this morning at E3 2013. Whether the PlayStation 4 will support it is another question. "No, it doesn't," Yoshida told us. Not yet, that is.

 

When we asked whether the company's planning on offering support in the future, he only offered a "No comment" with a big smile.

By the way, Carmack is apparently working with Oculus nearly full time now:

The Penny Arcade Report has been able to clarify that Carmack begins working full time for Oculus today, but still has “ties” to id Software, according to Oculus PR. His role in the company he co-founded, if any, is unknown at this point. We'll be following up to see what we can find out about his relationship to the company.
