Far Cry

Wow. No love for Far Cry? :(

I downloaded the demo, and it seems very cool. I was able to jack all the effects and graphical options up to the max, and it is a VERY pretty game to look at. I'll try and post some screenies later tonight.

The AI of the enemies seems good. They'll call for backup, take cover, hide, etc. Kind of reminds me of the AI in Halo for some reason.

The weapons are nice as well. Although I've only tried two of them. They seem to be more realistic. I know in Rainbow Six 3 I can get head shots with almost any weapon on the first shot, and although I've never fired a weapon in my life, it seem a tad unrealistic to me, especially with certain weapons. The weapons in Far Cry seem to be less precise, but if you're still or lying prone, it seems to make a difference.

The level included in the demo is very open ended. You can pretty much go to any island, in any order as long as you complete your goal.

There are also driveable vehicles, and some with mounted weapons as well.

There are some cool ragdoll physics in the game, and did I mention the game is beautiful? I'd lvoe to see a Jurassic Park game set on Isla Nublar/Sorna with this engine.

Anyways, those are my quick thoughts. Screens coming later tonight.

I've had my eye on the game for a while...it's supposedly coming to the Xbox (Ubi-Soft Montreal is doing the port), but my PC isn't up to snuff to check it out unless I get a new graphics card.

It does remind me of Halo from what I've seen, and that's a good thing.

NOT 56K Friendly!

Here are some pics I snapped for your enjoyment. They're not great, but show off the cool graphics and vehicles. These were taken at 1280x1024, with all graphics options maxed out. No AA or AF though.

Here's where the demo starts. That's the island you have to invade by yourself or whatnot.

Here's the island straight ahead in the first picture. Where I decided to beach my raft and start my assault.

Here's the effect of shooting an explosive canister.

Here are the two unlucky bastards that were near the canister. Note the cool blood effects.

Here's an attack boat I'm going to 'jack. There were guys in it, but I killed them first!

Inside the attack boat.

Here's from the top of a hill/mountain.

So far I'm liking it. The ragdoll physics are topnotch and the little touches are what elevate the game. The fact that the bodies float on the water as do most of the objects that you can interact with. The enemy AI is also impressive. The pricks never stand still! They hide behind everything. They move to flank you and even call out flanking positions. They also LOVE to use grenades! Performance was great on my rig also with a 9700 pro. Definitely be buying this one upon release since I'm pretty impressed overall with this demo. (Good lord I need AA on this one though!).

i think you'll start seeing more and more games on the PC released as DVD only.

The last I heard both DOOM 3 and Half Life 2 would be shipping on DVD as well. [/b]

The art assests for a DOOM3 powered game are huge, so yep I imagine you will see DVD only release for that. I can't imagine HL2 based games not also using huge art assests.

Hey Kelley,

Unreal Tournament 2004 is shipping on DVD as well. :)

$39.99 at EBGames too (with extra goodies & a headset!):

But back on topic...

I'd love to see more games come on DVD. I hate 2 CD or more installs. They're just annoying. I do understand that not everyone has a DVD-ROM on their PC though.

IGN apparently confirms that Far Cry will see a 5 disc CD release in North America. Report is here:

And speaking of the full game release, we checked with Cord Smith, Brand Manager for Ubisoft, and confirmed that the North American retail version of Far Cry will ship on five CD-ROM discs. European markets will receive the game on exclusively DVD-ROM, as DVD drives are much more far more prevalent in that region.
