Robot Monkey
Visual Concepts has revealed that the next game in its ESPN NFL Football series will feature a first-person mode in which players will be able to view the action from the perspective of a player on the field. Detail at Gamespot. Screenshots, too. It looks interesting. Dunno how it will play out. I can't think of any football or baseball game that does this -- anyone know of any? Certainly an interesting chance to take in the area of avoiding stagnation and the old $50-for-essentially-a-roster-update complaint. -j
Buck
Definitely looks interesting. What would be really cool is if you can move the players head with right thumb-stick and control him with the left.
Calvin
There was one football game that I can remember that did this - though it was one of the infamous "FMV" games . Quarterback Attack had Mike Ditka in it & came out for both the Sega Saturn & the 3DO systems. I'm interested in this mode - just another reason to get this instead of Madden... Camp
It would be even cooler with a crosshair and a shotgun or flamethrower or minigun or ....
Robot Monkey
Okay there's is a video (.wmv format) here at TeamXbox that highlights the first-person stuff. Sapp's voice is featured prominently near the end; I wonder if Sapp's voice be in the game. More info is available here at Gamespot. They mention the first-person mode features a threat indicator. Hey, Camp, maybe that won't be the only element coming over from Ghost Recon. -j
merlot
Now that's pretty sweet. I've always been interested in having a 1st person view in sports games. Although it's more of a gimic, and will limit your field of view, I'll use it sparingly. I wonder how playing as a reciever will work... iainl
They mention the first-person mode features a threat indicator. Hey, Camp, maybe that won't be the only element coming over from Ghost Recon. Am I the only one who thought RM was suggesting that people are going to start whingeing about camping recievers? How does one camp at Gridiron, anyway?
Robot Monkey
Am I the only one who thought RM was suggesting that people are going to start whingeing about camping recievers? "Gannon drops back, he's looking, looking, fires it into the end-zone -- and it's picked off!" "Goddam, that was cheap, those Bucs were camping the endzone!" -j
Graeme
Despite the fact that I said it wouldn't work at the other place... the video does look somewhat intriguing. I can't imagine how being the receiver will work though, need to see video of that.
Camp
Thanks for the link to the video...seeing it in action helps wrap my head around it. Pretty cool. I think it would be great for a multiplayer online game. Everyone controlls one player via first person. With enought people it could be fun. Any chance this'll have an online option? Graeme
It was online last year, but only 2 XBoxes.
Mark E
Maybe they'll use a bullet-time Matrix effect to slow the game down . Or a radar or something, Daredevil style. Seriously though, wasn't there already a football title that tried providing a first person perspective option for the player? I could have sworn one came out prior to this... Robot Monkey
Maybe they'll use a bullet-time Matrix effect to slow the game down. Or a radar or something, Daredevil style. I think they are using both your ideas. There is some kind of user-activated slo-mo effect (no idea how it is managed) and a threat indicator. No word on whether it will suck, Daredevil-style. -j
Mark E
No word on whether it will suck, Daredevil-style. Hey I actually liked Daredevil thanks very much . Besides, any movie that constantly puts Jennifer Garner in leather has absolutely no need to have anything ELSE in its movie. The other good bits are just candles on an already iced cake. But iced with what?
