kelley 771
Ouch Supah...that wound is still fresh. I do find it sad that the best option we have to run US Soccer is an ex-player who didn't amount to much and is more famous for being an annoying talking head on a third string TV channel. Then he keeps all the movie threads and importantly the sports threads. Honestly he should have done that years ago. We learned here at LCVG from near the beginning is even though we are all tight and adults, politics ruin things quickly.

Big Sam rumours. Comments?
kelley 771
I don't think Big Sam is the right move, I've heard Blanc is interested in the job and I would be good with that. US needs to get away from lumping the ball up the field and actually try to play football. Only good thing about Wynalda running for US Soccer president is he wants to implement Promotion/Relegation for MLS.
Frank 187
The whole fucking system sucks in this country. I referee youth games so I see it every weekend. It's a joke.
kelley 771
What ages do you ref? My kid is 5 and we've already been approached by two "Clubs" for him to play at when he turns 12 and leaves the Rec leagues. Both of those clubs also want $1400 per season for him to play for them. When they say Soccer in America is Pay to Play, it absolutely 100% is. Only "Clubs" not with their hands out are the MLS ones and that is because they are required by MLS to direct all shirt money into their youth programs.

I usually ref 14+, but I do younger kids every now and then to fill in. I've done some adult games too, even a professional women's team in a friendly. Your son should not be playing in recreational leagues until age 12. Usually travel teams and academies exist for ages 8+. Get him into one of them ASAP if you want him to develop and if you can afford it. $1400 is actually pretty cheap. Guy I work with here in Jersey pays $6k a year. The ideal is to get him into an MLS academy team. They generally don't require parents to pay. Or just move to Europe
kelley 771
The local club, doesn’t start out of Rec until 12. It’s the poorest club in the area by far. He’s been invited to a Rapids U6 team but we’ve had some comments by other parents who were on the teams that we didn’t think would work for us.

It doesn't matter how much MLS tries to build the fanbase, if people can't afford to play the game to build the players. I've heard outrageous prices a few times in the past few months from parents around the country, and it's insane. WTF with the pay to play prices? Back home, it's the cost of a pair of boots and the cost of getting to games (and a few overheads for shirts etc obviously).
JoeyN 1,274
I watched a Real sports episode a month or so ago about youth sports , and it is shocking how much people pay for their kids to play on all these travel teams. Insane really.

Do the best to train him yourself I guess.

That’s why I used “Clubs”, these things they call clubs here in the US are merely ATMs for the people running them. Most of them have 2-4 teams per age group and then another set of the opposite sex. Each team is about 14-16 players. Each team is making about $22,000. Head Coaches make around $6,000 per team per season. Assistants usually make nothing. All the rest of that money goes into keeping up the playing surfaces and into the club founders back pockets. The parents pay for uniforms, boots, and all travel cost. A friend of mine has two kids playing travel soccer. They never go on a vacation not tied to a kid playing soccer, they went to Barcalona last year and Manchester this year. kelley 771
Also GAF is back up and it’s a total shit show. Place is going to be unreadable for days.
godhand 153
I forgot I got my non-tech news from GAF. What is a good not-reddit replacement?

hadareud 370
I'll miss the Windows Phone thread on GAF. It was made up of good people, much like the Football Thread was all those years ago. I haven't even been reading the gaming forum for years, really. It was far too fast moving for me and let's be honest, most people were cunts. Still, it was a good place to get tech news and some very decent info in general. Frank 187
I found out where many GAFers have been hiding out. Slaent.com. Pretty slick looking forum. PoliGAF and some other communities are there. I don't know how the fuck EL intends to keep all politics and social issues off his forum. Ridiculous.
hadareud 370
I doubt it makes much of a difference. I suspect most of the people that made the place bearable are gone for good. And most of them also won't show up on any of the replacement forums.

Batong 253
nba-gaf created it first, but yes that's where second generation football thread went. Neogaf is like The Borg and Football thread keep on fighting it and refuses to be assimilated.
SupahBlah 424
Oh yeah NBA gaf being nuked was fucking bullshit.

kelley 771
I don't know what software or theme they are running at SLAENT but it's fucking annoying to read.
Frank 187
They write their own software apparently. I think it's pretty easy to read. Dark theme is disgusting though.
