Amazon Echo Auto

Recommended Posts

I've been waiting for this!  https://www.amazon.com/Introducing-Echo-Auto-first-your/dp/B0753K4CWG/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&ref_=ods_gw_dg2_ha_mn_092018

Echo Auto, looks like it uses your phones data plan via what,  wifi sharing?  Or bluetooth?

  • Connects to Alexa using your phone, is ready in seconds, and plays through your car speakers. Includes Echo Auto Dash Mount.
  • With eight microphones designed for in-car acoustics, Echo Auto can hear you over music, A/C, and road noise.
  • Use your voice to play music, check the news, open the garage door, find the nearest gas station, and more.
  • Play Audible books, stream podcasts, or listen to Amazon Music, Spotify, Sirius XM, or NPR.
  • Make calls, set reminders, add items to your shopping and to-do lists, or manage your calendar.
  • With over 50,000 skills and counting, Alexa is always getting smarter. Skills are like apps and let you do more with Alexa.
  • Set location-based routines—automated actions Alexa can start when you leave the office or get home.
  • Ask for directions and Alexa connects to supported apps like Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Waze on your phone.

I almost bought the Garmin w/Alexa GPS thingy a week ago, but now I'll wait for this.  I just need more info on if you have to use your phone as wifi sharing, because I don't get unlimited on my current plan.

You can ask for an invite to get one at the introductory price of $25 (half-off) when they become available (later this year).

It's confusing to me because all the articles mention you connect it to your phone via bluetooth, but then it clearly says it uses bluetooth to connect to your cars BT connection (or you can use the Aux connection).

I'm no expert on BT, but aren't you restricted to just two things "paired" at a time.  I can connect the echo to my phone or I can connect the echo to my car, via BT, but not both.

Does it have two, separate BT connections?  If so, that's actually genius--Connect the Echo Auto to phone via one BT connection, from which it gets its internet connection using your phones normal data plan (is it even possible to do this?)  Connect the Echo Auto to car's input via the 2nd BT connection, to get the audio transmitted to the car's speakers.

I'm really hoping it's not the phone that has to do all the processing.  I'd rather the Echo do all the heavy lifting.  For $50, it would have to be more than just a microphone/transceiver, no?

While Alexa for the car has some cool elements, I don't understand the success Amazon's Alexa has achieved. Of the 4 main AI voice services (Alexa, Google, Siri & Cortana), I've found Alexa the least capable and easily the most frustrating. Alexa is never able to answer simple searches for facts (like, "Who played the character ___ in the movie ___?") while a simple "OK Google" gets that done with ease.

Installing skills for Alexa certainly extends usefulness -and the car device sounds as if skills will be critical. But Skills require me to do work on the back end. A house (or car) AI should just do all that for me.
