Considered argument can be read and either agreed with or not. But most of what we’re seeing right now is writers in a hurry knowing that there are clicks to be made in talking about any major pop culture trend, and with so many social media accounts in the world you’re guaranteed to say the current number one is racist, transphobic, left wing, right wing, centrist or anything else you need to fit your agenda today. And if you can’t? Well, that’s about a minute’s work to solve.

That is precisely what I mean by my #2 point:

Quote

Just because some people are offended doesn't mean that EVERYONE is offended and I shouldn't overreact as if everyone is feeling this way

The rage machine gets amplified and I shouldn't reflect the amplified signal with my anti-rage.

so I can't tell whether she sees dollar signs or rainbow flag

I will have to plagiarize that line at some point.

Midsommar -  not good.  I suppose there is more to this than the surface-level allegories about relationships, commune-ism, and seeking love. Or maybe it's just a really long breakup flick.

It's slow, but doesn't provide the constant sense of dread as Hereditary did. It's got some gruesome moments that you are actually grateful for, because finally something is happening. There are some weird mindfuck scenes, but there is never a real sense of peril from the viewpoint of the protagonists.

The payoff ending is lame and not worth the ride. Big disappointment. My wife is kinda mad at me for wasting a rare movie date-night on this.

I give it 2 out of 5 Swedish Roofies.

I finally saw Toy Story 4 today. I love all of the previous Toy Stories, and like many, thought the ending of 3 is pretty much perfect. But I had high hopes that Pixar would knock it out of the park again.

I liked TS4, it’s a very good movie, but there’s just something missing from it. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something is just slightly off. Maybe it’s that the story focuses so much on Woody that all the other characters, which make up a lot of the charm and humour, are nearly forgotten. Or maybe it’s just not quite as tight of a story as the previous three. I don’t know for certain, but there’s something.

Regardless, this movie will have a very special place in my heart. It was the first movie in a theatre that we took my 3 1/2 year old daughter to. Toy Story was the very first movie she ever saw from beginning to end, and she loves them. We got her a Woody and Buzz for Christmas and this movie has been circled as the first to take her to for quite some time. She saw an ad on TV for it a few weeks ago and has been asking to see it since (not knowing how release dates work and that theatres exist).

Taking a kid to a movie can can be a bit of an adventure. You’re not sure how they are going to act or react. Will she get bored? Will she try to get up and start walking around and then start to scream when we put her back in her seat? Will she ignore signs she has to go pee? All of these were a concern.

From the the moment she sat down in the giant reclining seats and looked at the huge screen playing a preview for that awful looking Dora movie, she was completely transfixed and enraptured with the whole experience. I tried to talk to her about not getting up, or talking, but she wasn’t listening. Her eyes were glued to the screen from beginning to end, only to remove them during one part that scared her.

When the movie was over, we took her to the Disney Store and bought her a small plush Jesse and when we got home, she really wanted to make her own Forky, so now we have to get some craft supplies. Overall, it was a pretty special day.

The Perfection (Netflix)  -  This movie kept the surprises coming.  Can't say a damn thing without giving away too much. It's weird, scary, bizarre, and satisfying.

I give it 4 out of 5 Musical Hacks.

Pet Sematary (2019) -  Pretty good scares, with the right tone throughout.  Not overly terrifying, but children-in-peril always gets me, evil animals scare me,  and evil children are even more dreadful in a horror movie for me, so this was a trifecta.   The ending was rather abrupt.  I think I liked the alternate ending a bit more.

The Atmos mix was one of the best in the use of the ceiling speakers.  There were a few moments where ONLY the height speakers were used, which seems rare to my aging ears.

I give it 3 out of 5 Twisted Sisters.

I finally watched Spiderman - Into the Spiderverse this weekend. I assumed based on word-of-mouth, that I would probably like it, but holy shit, it's an absolutely astonishing film in every respect. First of all, the story was really engaging and well put together. As someone who has grown very weary of superhero films (yes, even Deadpool), this was a real delight. It seems designed to subvert expectations, with a wink and a nod toward the genre. It also manages to be very inclusive without being at all forced. Simply great storytelling with great characters.

Technically it's spectacular, the animation is very stylized, which could be a distraction, but instead it elevates the visuals to match the great storytelling. I must say, it was absolute projector porn, the 4K image is literally jaw dropping. I swear I said "wow" out loud more than any movie I've seen in many years. The color rendition is hard to even believe. During some sequences, it was like someone had thrown fluorescent ink on the screen and then hit it with the world's brightest blacklight.

I'm possibly the last person on this forum to see this movie, but if any of you haven't seen it, you're in for a real treat.

Amazingly I still haven't seen it, that will change soon though.

I hadn’t seen Spiderverse either until recently. Very very good. Beautiful animation too. We need more unique animation films.

The Curse of La Llorona  -  This movie cockblocked me so hard!

Let me explain....

My wife grew up really poor, in a rough, abusive environment and lived through some of this shit. The mexican witch doctor would come visit their house and do the thing with the egg and all that crazy stuff. She never talks about it.

Well, this movie triggered some PTSD in her, and wrecked her. After we watched it, I had to spend the rest of the night reassuring and comforting her. She was pretty upset and genuinely scared.

Other than that, it was an ok movie. If it wasn't for jump scares, it wouldn't have any scares. Plot was decent. Hope to never watch it again.

I give it 2 out of 5 Crying Shames.

Took the now 11 year old Boy to go see Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

He's familiar with the books, loves ghost story movies, and was the perfect audience for it. It's creepy, it's spooky, it's camp fire ghost story-y, without being gory or filled with jump cuts. I enjoyed the narritive framing around the short story retellings. One fell a little flat, but that was down to the source material, according to the Boy.

Big thumbs up for that tween-y audience. I've no clue how it's reviewed with critics, I can see it completely flopping with them. This audience loved it. ;)
