Camp
I searched but couldn't find the original thread... There was a thread with a link to a video of a Japanese guy beating the NES version of Super Mario Brothers 3 in a stunning 11:02. I've watched the video countless times and continue to be amazed by it. Well, now I'm told it was done on a PC running an NES emulator. The implication being that the emulator allowed the guy to use save states to cover up his mistakes and re-play areas until he got them perfect. The end result being a video that appears to be continuous when, in actuality, the game was not beat in 11:02...it was edited that way. Anyway, I was curious if any of you knew if this is true? Is this video, in fact, the result of an emulator and nice editing?
Whooter
Camp, It's true. I can't find the link at the moment, but there's a posting at the site where it was originally located that admits as much...
adamsappel
Yes, it is fake, though it did take *two years* to make and seemingly wasn't done so maliciously. Here's a thread from sohh.com about it.
Camp
Cool...thanks for the info. Kind of a bummer but it makes me feel a little closer to human again.
Romier S
Kind of a bummer but it makes me feel a little closer to human again. Until you watch that Ikaruga movie and can't help but feel like an utter gaming peasant again.
Sam P
That's too bad it's a fake, but I still think it's a very cool exercise to show what is theoretically possible with that game. This is very childish, but it means we can build a robot that'll play SMB3 perfectly, just like that!
Mark E
Yeah, veracity aside, doesn't that mean that if you DID play perfectly you could finish the game in 11:02? I agree it blows that the video isn't real, but gives you something to aim for anyway .
