I forgot about an then started using the new Trophy tracker in the new PS5 UI for Kena. It’s very handy and fits right into the activity cards when you hit the PS button! Very nifty little tool and you shouldn’t sleep on it if trophies are a thing for you as they are for me.

Blockbuster game sale:

For those of you who missed out on the chance to get Sackboy for a reduced price earlier today, this is one of the games on sale. Not sure about the actual discount though. I would be surprised if it's 50% off, but at least it's something.

With PS+ it’s 47% off ($31.79). Without PS+ it’s still a very good discount at $35.

This isn't console specific or PS5 news per se but the rumor mill has been going for some time now that Sony will not update the PS5 with VRR until their TV line-up has been updated and there have been rumors that said update will be happening in the October/November timeframe. Well, we have our opening salvo:

Hopefully, this means we will see VRR/ALLM rolled out to the PS5 sooner rather than later! I'm excited for both but short term, I can't wait for ALLM. The convenience of my Series X just kicking on game mode when I need it is super underrated and not having to manually make that shift on the PS5 will be wonderful. Long term, I'm planning a big refresh/upgrade on the audio side of my home theater with a new Atmos setup and the latest Onkyo HDMI 2.1 receiver in the March 2022 range so VRR will be a welcome addition.

Looks like Sony is starting to do game trials:

You can download and play 5-6 hours of each of these games before buying. Only on PS5.

I'm sort of surprised, especially from Sony, but I can see them doing this only for certain titles. Death Stranding is perfect for this. A questionable game to buy for many, but once you give it a shot it's likely to hook you.

I see now that it actually says this right in the text but I was reading how this trial is not 5 hours of game time, but 5 hours real time from the moment you hit the download button. So your download time is included, and if you have to stop playing and come back, the clock is still ticking.

That seems kinda dumb.

More TV news but its relevant to the PS5 and VRR/ALLM. Sony is rolling out "Perfect for Playstation 5" branding and features for certain Bravia sets.

'Perfect for PlayStation 5' TVs will bring in two brand-new PS5 exclusive features1 – Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode. They also support frame rates up to 120fps in a super-crisp 4K resolution as specified in HDMI 2.1 for compatible games2. Additionally, with input lag as low as 6.0ms on the Z9J and 8.5ms3 on the other BRAVIA XR TV models, customers can experience extraordinary smoothness and responsiveness in shooting, sports and high-performance games with instant on-screen action.

"In collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment, we are thrilled to offer our customers new features to enhance their gaming experiences," said Tyler Ishida, Deputy President for Consumer Business Group, Sony Electronics Inc. "With best-in-class picture quality, low input lag and the addition of Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode, we can confidently say that BRAVIA XR TVs are 'Perfect for PlayStation 5'."

The important note:

Software updates, available by the end of January 2022, on both PS5 and BRAVIA XR TVs are required to access Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode.

Judging by that, it looks like ALLM and VRR are on the map by the end of January 2022. Given that they are releasing the VRR update for the X900H and are still working on additional updates to correct some issues with that rollout, it seems likely. Auto Genre mode is ALLM by another name and the Auto Tone Mapping seems to be aligning the Bravia sets to the HGIG configuration in the PS5 setup menus.
