The PlayStation 5 (PS5) Thread — Launching November 12, 2020 | $499 Regular, $399 Digital

Recommended Posts

If the cost to build is on the high end, and they need/want to charge $500+, I could see something like:

Digital Edition: $499

Disc Drive version: $579

  • $50 is too small of difference to justify the two SKUs
  • $599 is still optically too high in 2020, (plus the history of that number), so $579.
  • The Digital Edition gets them at the marketable "starting at" $499 price point
  • If the margin is thin on the Digital Edition, PSN only game sales may make up for it in the long term since they cut out the retailer middle-man

Alternatively, if the cost to build is lower, then $499 is the top end price (Disc Drive version) and take a loss on the Digital Only to compete/undercut Microsoft an $399 and make it up with direct game sales mentioned above.

I got a pre-order in with Target.

If the total cost for both the PS5 and Series X is under $1,000 (excluding tax), I will likely buy both this year because, fuck it, I’m a grown up with a job, and I want them.

Got the email confirmation from Amazon at least.   Physical. Digital Foundry had better not reveal it to be noisier than the digital model!   Interestingly they did not even upload the digit

Certainly possible, yes.

Unfortunately.

I do think that this scenario highly underrates the blow back from the hardcore collectors like me that are more likely to buy the console day one and may instead decide to invest in a Series X at roughly the same price with a drive intact when a vast majority of titles are third party. We aren't all a monolith, afterall. Is Sony willing to take that chance? We'll see.

Yeah, but you're going to want those Sony exclusives, too. What are you going to do, buy the physical release and the digital one! Bwahaha!

Oh, wait!

My prediction on PS5 pricing:

PS5: $499

PS5 Digital Edition: $399

Microsoft will match the pricing on the Digital Edition, assuming they also don't have two SKUs for the Series X — one with and one without an optical drive.

You said $399 just to drag the rest of us into conversation kicking & screaming, didn't you!

Fine, whaaaaaaaaa!

$399 doesn't give them much future price drop wiggle room.

It's $499 & $599!

i guarantee it GIF

Sony already tried $499 and $599 back in the PS3 launch - I don't think they'll repeat that again.

Combined with the bloomberg report cost estimate of $450 (which I'll assume includes a disc drive) it just makes sense to me that they'll go for $399 for the digital version.

Looks more balanced yes. I'm surprised the thin wings do not extend so far as to act as a counterbalance to the optical drive end as that would allow it to sit horizontally without the stand. Also, it's clear to me that my curiosity about whether the discless model could benefit from the free space as far as cooling goes would appear irrelevant as the drive is, in a sense, an external part of the the design since the black enclosed mid section of the console is identical on both models and will be where all the processing power lives (and the fan is going to be at the chunky end were all the little ventilation slots are anyway).

The open flaps at the top and the myriad of cooling vents there and around the internal “module” design really has me hoping we’re dealing with a super quest machine.

Yep. $499 is the max number for both consoles, IMO. I just don't think Sony is going to put their gaming business in peril releasing a console for $599 after the PS3. It would ignore every damned lesson learned during this current generation. I also don't think Microsoft is prepared to be absurdly undercut on price again even with a far lesser powered Lockhart supposedly on the horizon. I'll reiterate, $599 is *not* a mass market price.

Pricing for the digital will be interesting but I could totally see everything from $399, $449 or same price with add-ons. All are perfectly viable!

Good video.

Fine, it's not like my gif guarantee was worth shit anyway. I hereby rescind my empty prediction, I defer to you lower price point folks.

And naturally, I hope you are indeed correct!
