It’s missing Sting.... but other than that it looks pretty good.

I might need to brush up on the story again. I’m a little afraid that I won’t know/remember what is going on.

I would have been clueless watching the David Lynch version if my dad hadn’t been watching it with me.

The Lynch version has some of the most iconic imagery in film for me - the Baron, the sandworms, the Bene Gesserit, the stillsuits;  literally so much in the movie is utterly amazing visually. It’s a mess of a movie as far as story, pacing, the various versions and edits... But, it’s cast really well, it’s cinematography and “visual language” is stunning and I still love it.

I’m definitely looking forward to the new Dune. It takes nothing away from the Lynch version but, I can’t wait to see this new one. I just love this story and the universe of Dune :)

I'm still not finished with God Emperor of Dune. Really looking forward to this film. As time goes on, I think this will have the potential to be a definitive Dune with the Lynch version still being talked about from time to time. But no one will remember the Sci-Fi version. I watched it recently, and I'm not too big on some of the design choices.

It’s a shitty adaptation, yes but I have a soft spot for it. It has a good cast, great art direction and an awesome soundtrack. The TV cut was always my preferred version.

I agree with all of this.

I haven’t seen the TV edit, so I don’t know if I agree with that part.

You would have been less lost if you had. It adds a ton of narration going over the different houses, guilds, what’s at stake, etc. It also adds some key scenes like Fremen extracting the water of life from a worm and more. Yes, the narration is hokey but it makes the film less obtuse for those who may be unfamiliar with the book. Even with the additions, it totally glosses over some of the key elements of the book. Paul’s struggle with how he chooses to use the Fremen and the galactic jihad he unleashes in the process being the most poignant. Along with many important sub- plots including Jessica’s lineage, Gurney’s suspecting of Jessica being the Atreides traitor which leads to Paul choosing to drink the water, etc.

I'm curious to see if Arrow's forthcoming disc of the Lynch version will include the TV edit.

I hope so. I watched the DVD of the TV cut recently specifically because there’s no proper Blu-Ray release.

Arrow did go to the effort of reconstructing the TV edit of Waterworld from the original elements for their Blu-ray release, so perhaps they will do the same for Dune.

I have no idea how you handle the Saudaukar. It's like they saw the Hefty Garbage Bag design of the Lynch version and added a dash of Batman and Robin campiness.

Aren't the Saudaukar the ones in white in the trailer? At the 1:28 and 1:32 mark? They looked pretty bad ass to me.

EDIT: Oh nevermind, you're referring to the Sci-Fi mini-series.:)

To be fair, the concept art didn't look as bad:

The final costumes look like Ren-Faire rejects. Especially that dopey motherfucker on the left.

*snicker*
