Still embarrassed to say I have next to no familiarity with the Diablo series, even though many years ago @iainl kindly had a copy of one of the earlier games on PC going spare that I just never got round to installing!. Would this be a better place to start vs III (which I note is already approaching nine years old)?

III is the only one I've played, and I only really got into playing through the levels in single-player for the plot and environments, rather than the loot grind side that seems to suck in so many. But my impression from the trailer is that this is still II but with shinier graphics and an awful lot (an AWFUL LOT) of clever real-time lighting effects. So my gut says III has a lot of variation in the environments compared to these rectangular levels, but as I understand it, II has more on the loads and loads of enemies and clever weapons stuff. So what are you after from the game?

III is a more sprawling game with more build variety in its current iteration but II is the stronger game from a narrative perspective and frankly has stronger art direction overall. It's a modern classic that still has some of the most addictive gameplay in the ARPG genre and its loot drop system is sheer perfection in terms of giving the player a sense of progression and "building up power". I would wait for this to release and then move nicely into III. Of course I still adore the original and its piddly 16 "simple" levels for its atmosphere alone but we're not getting a resurrected edition of that (yet).

EDIT: Surprised no one has mentioned that the Barbarian class in that video thumbnails has an uncanny resemblance to David Bautista...:lawl

This is like the lowest key "major" release I've ever seen. Almost no big conversation around it, really. Given Blizzard's legal issues, I somewhat understand that.

I did pick up the game on the Series X and played through an hour or so today. It's pretty great! The performance mode runs at a smooth 60fps and though the resolution downgrade is noticeable from the 30fps quality mode, it still looks like its running high enough to maintain a good level of sharpness/detail (seems to be in the 1440p range to my eye but I'm no great pixel counter).

I *love* that the legacy mode is built in and easy to swap to (LT + view button on the Xbox controller). Having the OG visuals are your fingertips is just fun. The music immediately took me back to my days of apartment living and spending hours on my PC playing through the game. Nostalgia overload.:)

It will be a bit before I really dive in as I'm still deep into Kena but I'm super excited to dive back in. It's still remains as one of the greatest ARPG's of all time, IMO.

Probably going to pick it up. Lack of local coop and cross play is disappointing though. Haven’t seen too many comments yet, any advantage to owning on X or PS5?

There’s almost nothing out there comparing the two. I read that the PS5’s performance mode was pretty soft and lower resolution during the beta and the promised DualSense features are MIA so I went Series X for the better IQ and possibly performance.

Yeah, before Activision bought them. That Blizzard does not exist anymore.

Blizzard releases games so infrequently. I have no perspective for whether they still make great games or not. I loved WOW and Diablo 3 when I played them.

I assume Diablo IV will be great. I’m not sure how people rationalize that a big company being bought by an even bigger company will ever make the products better. I don’t think that has ever happened.

Usually the only benefit is greater resources like QA, marketing, lateral moving employees, etc. But that already happened when Activision bought them.

Decided to try this on PS4.  I haven't played a Diablo game since the OG back in the day.  I don't think I was PC gaming at the time Diablo 2 came out so I never played it (at least I don't remember doing so).  Anyway after much mucking about while getting used to how the game plays (d2.maxroll.gg/guides has been a big help) I am finally in the groove and getting hooked.  Finally died in Act 2's finale when I encountered Duriel for the first time.  So I completely forgot you can put your gold in the personal or shared storage and I had over 100,000 on me when I died.  Its all gone.  I quit playing for the night when that happened.  :)  I was happy to see your body appears in town when you fire up the game again so all my goodies are still there.  Spent some time farming for gold, leveled up a few more times, attached one of the magic offensive combat skills to my normal attack, rehired my old companion, put some thaw potions in my belt along with a bunch of health potions, put all my charms on and then defeated Duriel with ease this time.  Messin' around in Act 3 now.  Can't believe I never played this.  Can see why people were so addicted to it.

Is that failed to authenticate "feature" still a thing when you dont play the game for 30 days?  Why on earth would they do that?
