Music that reminds you of games

I was listening to Orbital's In Sides release today, feeling bad that it hadn't gotten any play between all of the newer albums I've downloaded from eMusic the past few months.

While listening I was reminded of something that surprises me every time: The intro to track 8, Out There Somewhere Part 2 reminds me of Gradius: Interstellar Assault for the original GameBoy.

This has happened to me before, but none with the power of this combination. Thinking on this made me curious: Is this something that is unique to me, or do the rest of you find yourself thinking about a game after listening to specific songs?

Everytime I hear any Foriegner song from their Greatest Hits and Beyond CD I think of Thunder Force 3 on the Sega Genesis. When I was playing the game, I used to turn the sound off and listen to that tape constantly. For some reason "I Don't Wanna Live Without You" just fits a sidescrolling shooter. :)

My mom tapes soap operas to watch later, and years ago she came running into the room exclaiming "Its Metroid music!" She played it back for me and sure enough on the background for either As the World Turns or The Guiding Light - it sounded just like some of the music from Super Metroid. This was about 1996 or so.

Well, The Tea Party frequently reminds me of Prince of Persia: SoT. Part of this might be due to the fact that one of the band members composed PoP:SoT and I only learned of The Tea Party after googling the composer.

Also, sometimes turning a noun into a verb has unexpected results. I did not, in fact "google the composer." I don't know Stuart Chatwood and, even if I did, I would choose not to google him. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Whoah, yet another (very strong) reason to pick up this game. It also reminds me that I haven't purchased any of their music since TRIPtych.

I might have to go spend some money tonight!
