Robot Monkey
(I wanted to separate this from the KOTOR general discussion thread) Does anyone else have any thought s on the play balance? I had the unique (and odd and nerdly) of spending a day with KOTOR while someone played KOTOR on another TV in the same room. I was struck by how neither of us got totally frustrated during play, nor did either of us find it to be a breeze, lacking any challenge. Keep in mind that this game is without difficulty settings and my buddy and I have varying degrees of proficiency in different areas. It was also an interesting way to see how the game supports very different playing styles (as his character fucked her way through the various quests). -j
Buck
Keep in mind that this game is without difficulty settings Actually, there are difficulty settings. You are warned if you change them that the gameplay will be drastically effected.
JoeyN
I love the gameplay. Im not really a big fan of these types of games but im hooked on this one. Not to hard, not to easy. just right on the default mode. When im done i may try a harder mode for the hell of it capt
Romier S
I was struck by how neither of us got totally frustrated during play, nor did either of us find it to be a breeze, lacking any challenge. I found things to be a tad too easy at first Jay. Of course I've been playing on this combat system for years now (or a variation of it if you will as this is very similiar to combat systems found in games like Baldurs Gate I and II and several other games developed by Bioware and Black Isle). So I had an affinity for the combat system from the get-go. I bumped the difficulty up to hard and find it to be perfect for me. Good challenge but no mind-numbingly difficult. Overall though, I absolutely love this game. I would love to see KOTOR snatch some RPG GOTY (or even GOTY period) nominations or awards. It would be phenominal for a "western" style RPG to really give dominating japanese RPG style a run for its money this year (even with extremely high qaulity releases like Dark Cloud 2 and Xenosaga Ep I). Should be interesting to watch....
JoeyN
All i know is im not even far into the game and i hope for a sequal :-)
Robot Monkey
I had no idea that there were difficult settings! I found things to be a tad too easy at first Jay. Well, you don't count you're a madman. And it was a good thing you didn't come over Saturday. I swear to God, we played the entire day and night with side-by-side TVs. Sick. Upon reflection, I think the frustration (or lack thereof) in the game didn't become an issue because of a story and writing (especially the dialog) that I enjoy very much. BTW, the HK droid is hilarious in your party. -j
Camp
(as his character fucked her way through the various quests). Whoa! You can do that? If that's true I'm going to dump my 25 hours and get a female character. Cool.
Robot Monkey
I saw him ply Sith troopers with his (her?) wiles on one occasion early in the game, and I think he did it again later. -j
merlot
As I mentioned in the other thread, I normally don't play RPG's, but this game is great. The graphics, for the most part, are well down. I like the Halo like reflections on the armor. The DD 5.1 sound is top notch, as it always is with SW games. And the voice acting is better than both Episodes I & II! The story is what is driving the game though, and it's very well done. Chalk me up an another who would love a sequel. For the second day in a row I'm sidelined from work with an injury. What better time for me to get hurt! (although I'm gonna miss a big golf trip this weekend  )
EnemaEms
The questioni is, if you are a female character, can you boink the Hutts? Now that image is almsot as bad as picturing your parents banging. -Dean-

Now that image is almsot as bad as picturing your parents banging. -Dean- First off, neither of these is a mental image I need. Secondly .... I have never played a game like this. Ever. Is the learning curve easy ? What I am gathering from your posts is that you can learn as you go. Correct ?
EnemaEms
Leslie, I don't like RPGs, but this game has me addicted. The gameplay has a slight learning curve to it, but you shouldn't have a problem picking it up. Any Star Wars fan owes it to themselves to play this game. -Dean-
Robot Monkey
I have never played a game like this. Ever. Is the learning curve easy? What I am gathering from your posts is that you can learn as you go. Generally speaking, I would say that this game is easy to pick up, especially when compared to its competition, Morrowind. Unfortunately, this is coming from someone who has been playing these games since they appeared on computers. The game features a nice tutorial integrated into the gameplay that will cover most basics early in the game. Other lessons, instructions and hints are also available later (for example, you can get instructions on the pazaak mini-game later in the game when you need it). The game manual is adequate, which is actually above-average given the sorry state of manual writing these days. In my day each game came packaged with a manual the size of the NYC Yellow Pages, and that's the way I likes it. Unless it's beefy and worthless, like the MOO3 manual or a civilian Hummer. Still, I imagine things can get get frustrating when you try to puzzle out whether you should take "Conditioning" over "Master Flurry" (Answer: No). Having said all that, here's what I think: 1) I think KOTOR is the best introduction to RPGs you will find, 2) You should give it a couple hours of play and 3) Make sure you have someone conveniently available to help you with interface minutiae and genre cruft with which you aren't familiar. -j

AnthonyVolpe
KOTOR is impressive so far. However I wasn't expecting an RPG. I thought I was basically going to walk around and start whooping some ass with my lightsaber in real time. I'm still not used to the setup and I still screw up every now and again, but I'm still looking forward to playing it more. And no, Jay, I'm not planning on returning it and buying it again. Whooter
However I wasn't expecting an RPG. Have you been living in a cave?
AnthonyVolpe
Have you been living in a cave? Okay, okay... it depends on your definition of RPG. Technically, any game at all that you don't play as yourself is a role-playing game. But I guess I've got the Japanese Final Fantasy-type games drilled into my psyche when I think "RPG." Attack, wait your turn, get beat up, use magic, repeat. As far as American stuff like Everquest, Neverwinter Nights, and Morrowind, I haven't had too much experience. I haven't heard or seen a lot in the way of previews regarding KOTOR other than its content, its length, its look, and the fact that BioWare made it. I had reason enough to buy it already based on the aforementioned.

Hank Scorpio
Finally finished it last nite. 40 hours and 7 minutes well spent. It was one of the fastest 40 hour games I've ever played. Now then, onto Silent Hill 3...
EnemaEms
I finished it up just over a week ago. I was around 35 hours. I am proud to say I finished as a SUpreme Dark Lord of the Sith. Even the members of my party were not immune to my wraith. KOTOR is easily one of the Top 5 games I have ever played. There better be a damn sequel. -Dean-
Cathartic
I wrapped up at a healthy 71 hours of game time. Of course, I talked to almost everyone I ran into and completed just about every side-quest I was given (which was quite a few). I ended up finishing with my light/dark meter pegged as high as it would go on the light side. Just for kicks after I was done, I reloaded a game at a fairly pivotal point and decided to turn dark. The guilt trip I embarked on was absolutely horrible. I know it's just a game, but I couldn't help feeling terrible. Some of the things that this game will let you do are just pure evil. Overall, it really is a fantastic game. The only issue I had was periodic trouble with character pathing. Occasionally, I'd run a considerable distance, only to find one or both of my groupmates halfway across the map where I started, standing around like mindless fools instead of following me. The moral of the story is "keep an eye on your group". Aside from that, I have no real complaints. The story was excellent. The voice acting is first rate. Aesthetically, the game is a marvel. Once the interface becomes second nature, the game becomes very immersive - especially when you play for hours at a stretch. Just remember to blink occasionally.
fishepa
Force persuade and Force Choke are the best powers in the game. There is nothing better than force choking some guy in the cantina, and then he's too scared to even talk to you.
