Mark E
If you buzz by the link below, you can check out IGN's new trailer for Namco's Tales of Symphonia. I'm still not sure what's up with the combat engine or how it'll work in play, but I have to admit that the cel-shaded look really does well for this game, it gives it a nice anime vibe. Looking forward to it thus far. Lord knows the Cube could use a couple more sweet RPG exclusives. http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMediaPage.js...es+of+Symphonia Oh, I checked out the latest XIII trailer too. While the game looks sweeeeeet, I gotta say that I found Duchovny's voice really, really distracting. Not exactly infused with emotion either (even for deadpan), but hopefully it'll play well in the final game. edit: changed the thread title to make it a bit more of a fit and to not end up with too many ToS threads. Mark E
Report over on IGN indicates that Tales of Symphonia got a 10, 9, 10, 9 from the reviewers in Dengeki (sp) magazine. I can't remember if they're a decent source of unbiased reviewing or not, but hopefully it's an indicator of quality end product. They lauded the story, combat, and character development. I am praying that this game is going to be a rock solid RPG because they Cube could use a choice RPG exclusive. Skies of Arcadia 2 would be fun, but this would totally be acceptable. Mark E
I will continue to march forward in my tireless quest to promote this game because, dammit, I have high hopes for it, and the Cube needs sweet RPGs . Here's a link to the IGN hands-on with the game, it looks like a winner. Nice to see they brought back the 'other players can control other characters' thing from Final Fantasy VI, even if it is in a Namco game. This is my third most anticipated 2004 release behind Resident Evil and Donkey Konga... IGN Hands-On: Tales of Symphonia
Mark E
This may be the longest running thread supported solely by one person . There's now an import review of this title up over at Planet GameCube. Which means it may be a tad 'teh bias' but it gives some good breakdown. There's even a slight multiplayer component that I was not aware of, which was a pleasant little surprise. Tales of Symphonia review
The Daisy
I'm on board with you on this one Pharm. The review did seem a bit biased, but not terribly so. I think you have to assume a certain amount of that when they have the platform name in their URL. Same reason I don't favor reviews from places like Xbox Nation. Sounds like they'll have to make some pretty big changes to localize it to the US, but I'm anxious to see how it turns out. Glen
Mark E
Sounds like they'll have to make some pretty big changes to localize it to the US I always find that so disappointing, at least leave us the option to partake of the Japanese version for those of us who don't mind subtitling. To my mind, the best solution (besides both options) would be to get the JPOP song redone in English, a la Simple & Clean from Kingdom Hearts. That song is not as good in English, imho, but it is better than just outright scrapping it from the game too.
Mark E
Did I mention I love this thread? Aight, new media up at IGN, some very nice movies and screenshots plus some impressions. This game looks great. Between Baiten Kaitos and this, Cube owners are finally getting a little RPG loving this year! Link to the article, which then goes to the media. I like the combat system here, it looks nice and fast.
The Daisy
That combat system is incredibly fast. It transitioned to the battle sequence and I was expecting the same old, same old. Wow. That looked like an actual fun battle to participate in. One other thing that I'm hoping for is that there is actual speech for all of the dialog in the game... not just cut scenes. Regarding the thread, looks like you and I are the only ones looking for these great RPG's on the Cube. Add this to the rumored Skies of Arcadia sequel out there and we get lots of RPG loving in the future. Glen
Clay
I too, am looking forward to this game. Being that I like the Tales games, I have been avoiding pretty much all spoilers and reviews and whatnot. I just wish we would have gotten Tales of Destiny 2 on the PS2, but this game looks to more than make up for it. Clay
Mark E
rumored Skies of Arcadia sequel Last I heard this had gotten the kibosh though, since SoA did not do great numbers on the Cube (which is ridiculous, the game's fantastic, but it was an old DC port with nondistinct cover art so it's easy to see why). RPGs are definitely one of the Cube's light genres, but with Tales, Baten Kaitos, and Paper Mario on the way and some other Square goodies, we seem to be doing fine. I'd rather get a handful of stellar RPGs instead of a glut of mediocre ones.
adamsappel
I think SoA may have had a recent re-press. It's cropping back up on a lot of cheap-deals websites and prices are falling on eBay.
Mark E
Morning all, there's a new U.S. trailer up at IGN, looks nice and tasty. They took out the j-pop song from the intro apparently, which is hardly shocking but I find nonetheless disappointing. I'm a big fan of options . Game itself still looks very very nice though. Click for trailer.
The Daisy
I'm a happy RPG'er at this point. Although, they could have done without the guitar riffs at the end of the trailer. Glen
Mark E
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I'm not sure what the sudden divergence into techno territory was all about .
Mark E
New shots from the U.S. version are up on IGN now, and they are fantastic. Man does this game ever look beautiful. Clicks for pics.
scobeto
Wow. I haven't paid too much attention to this game, but can tell you this: If any game deserves to be bought on screens alone, it is this one  I will start following this one more closely, that's for sure. Mark E
More fresh IGN images from the English version. Yep, still looks amazing. There's a great combat shot if you scroll down where it looks like a water or ice effect is being used, very nice. :tu: Mmm... Orpheus
Wow, hadn't looked in this thread. Tales of Symphonia is looking mighty sweet. Hopefully my coworker will get my copy of SoA back to me in plenty of time to play it before this comes out.
The Daisy
This is looking like quite the RPG at this point. Let's just hope that people get out and buy it. Glen
Mark E
Nuts to them, I'll have a copy the second it hits the shelves just in case they don't and it becomes rare .

Mark E
Hmm, quick question which is sort of ToS related, sort of not. I was on the main site there and attempting to download the wallpapers and the wallpaper comes in an exe file that's attempting to install 'swfDesktop Supercharged Wallpaper' from some media thing. I have no intention of running this, but does anybody know if this is spyware or no? Just curious, because it practically reeks of it to me and it seems weird for it to be on Namco's ToS page like that.
The Daisy
Some of the companies are bundling wallpapers and such into exes that just put them into your registry. You can try to run the exe from the command prompt, "wallpaper.exe /?" and see if there is a way to extract the files in it. Just a thought.
