Need another Bioware-esque RPG for cheap?

Hey, some of you will be finished KOTOR in a couple of days I'm sure, and I'd just like to take this opportunity to recommend those of you enjoying this game check out another easily accessible RPG with smart dialogue, original plot, and stat-based gameplay where your abilities really make a difference (charisma having a huge effect on conversation choices and what not).

Not to mention the chance to win by being a total bastard still ;).

The game in question would be Interplay's Planescape: Torment, which is now bargain priced at most stores in North America. I can't recommend this game enough to those of you seeking something non-Square by way of RPGs. It has a great setting and I can't stress the originality of the plot.

That is all. I am a big pusher of games that I don't think got a fair shake when they were first released ;).

I got this game with the PC version of Driver as part of a trade last month. I'm looking forward to starting it up as it's been awhile since I played a good RPG.

I've heard nothing but good things about it, but I haven't finished my 12 step Battlefield 1942 program so I'm not quite ready to fire it up.

I'm not sure sales wise but it sure got is fair share in critical reviews and player adoration. Its on my favorite RPG's of all time. Interplay's Black Isle studio did a bang up job on the story and I wanted to say that if you buy the game. you will be doing *ALOT* of reading. This is almost an interactive novel. However you will love the storyline and gameplay if you can get into it.

This is almost an interactive novel.

No denying that, that's for sure. But emphasis on the interactive part. You really get to make a lot of choices that affect your progress through the game and your character interactions. There are a ton of memorable scenes in this game. Sadly almost all of them would be spoilers :P.

Morte and Dakkon are two of my favorite characters in any game I've played. Well, Annah is fun too; Sheena Easton rocked and rolled that part.

I know it had critical success and most of us who played adored it (it's in my Top 5 RPGs, no question), but I'm not sure if it really had a great run in stores. I'm not concerned myself mind, I have my copy and it isn't going anywhere. Actually I might install this and start it again tonight :P.

I haven't played it yet (it's on my "to buy" list, I swear), but I hear Summoner:A Goddess Reborn on the GameCube is a superior RPG experience.

I'll tell you Adam. I like to think I'm a fairly level headed guy and that I give every game its due chance to impress me but I cannot fathom how ANYONE could find Summoner: A Gooddess Reborn to be a "superior" RPG experience.

Surely its a matter of preference of course. Some call Planescape: Planescape Boredom because of the huge amount of reading involved (and mind you it is not uncommon to spend a good 15-20 minutes reading nothing but dialogue and finding out more and more about the world). In that regard I can certainly understand someone not enjoying Torment. In terms however of polish, quality of writing, voice acting, production value, quality of story and as Mark mentioned interactivity and players involvement in the world, Planescape's only competition is the Fallout series IMHO.

Respect for Mark = LOST

It was that heinous interface, I just could not get into it at all. After you shoot a gun at a rat six times and it misses five of those times, I wanted to go kick a puppy. And I played, damn, I put over five hours into the first one AND the sequel (just in case it was bugging me less :P). Nope, no go.

Which is weird, because the combat was driving me nuts but turn-based combat in, say, the earlier Ultima titles never really got to me that badly.

I loved the combat system, though I do agree that it was a tad clunky. (Can we get that fixed in a Fallout 3?? PLEASE INTERPLAY!) Like you said Mark, goes to show how different folks are in thier thinking (and further supports my decision to *NOT* include scores on the reviews on this site).

On the same subject I was just reading through this and I'm really getting excited for this one. D&D set in the Greyhawk campaign. (Made by Troika of which several members worked on the Fallout series  )

And also made Arcanum, which, wait for it, I ALSO tried to play ;). I'll hold back for the reviews on this one :P. I've got to admit that while I see the appeal of streamlining the D&D rules with the 3rd edition, I actually preferred the wide class selection available in 2nd edition.

The thing I disliked about Neverwinter Nights was that it felt too much like your characters were all the same damn thing. That's just me though. The RP parts of NWN were fun. We ought to get somebody here to GM and do a campaign dealie :P.

I'd be up for a good bout of NWN, especially if someone wanted to run some of the better fan created modules out there. A friend of mine is currently converting our PNP campaign and what he has right now is looking especially sweet.

I'm interested in The Temple of Elemental Evil game that's coming out as well. Never cared for the Greyhawk setting a whole lot, but TEE was a great module. The thing that I really like about this one is that it's gonna be turn based, which appeals to me so much more than real time.

With how cheap it is, anyone who loves RPG's should at least try to play Fallout 2. I still keep coming back to that game since there are so many different ways to go through it. The possibilty of Fallout 3 has me pretty stoked.

I guess I'll find out, someday, as I saw this game on sale today and picked it up.
