Anyone own a Palm Zire 71?

I don't own the Zire but I do own one of the Sony Clie models with the built-in camera (mine is the NR70v).

Could I live without the camera? Absolutely. Do I ever use the camera? Absolutely.

I found that I don't use the camera in a traditional manner at all. Rather than seeking "kodak moments" I use the camera as sort of a visual note pad. At work (retail) I'll take pictures of something an employee did (good or bad) or great merchandising ideas from other stores. I've used it as a scanner to take pictures of documents and to take upskirt pictures at the library. ;) (j/k)

I've played with the Zire and really like the way they implemented the camera. Palm's newer models (Zire and Tungsten T2) are much improved. If they only supported hi-res+ (320x480 screens)like the upper model Sony's I'd be more of an admirer. The rumored Tungsten T3 may do just that.

I couldn't live without my Clie but I'm almost ready to upgrade. I'm hoping Palm OS 6 is released this Fall as I intend to upgrade to whatever high-end model Sony releases so long as it runs OS 6. -that is, unless someone manages to convince me to switch to PocketPC.

Ha! Sounds like you have some good use for the camera. Very creative. Palm OS 6? I have not even seen OS 5. Maybe I will hold off for a while...

I have not even seen OS 5.

Sure you have...The Zire Z1 runs OS 5.2.1

OS 5 is just OS 4.1 with added support for the multimedia extensions Sony was putting in their OS 4.1 Clies. Sony had to hack 4.1 to get it to play MP3's and movie files...Palm had the ability to just update the OS. OS 5 also removes the RAM restrictions and adds support for the newer fast processors.

OS 6 is the real deal. It's the first major update to the Palm OS in a LONG time. -or that's what Palm OS fans are hoping for.
