You can see all the nominees here at CNN.com

Best Original Song -"Into the west"

Best Original Score -LOTR :ROTK

I picked ROTK for a lot of stuff well because it deserves it. With no actors nominated (Sean Astin was robbed) think they will lean towards giving it more technical awards

I'm ashamed to say that I've seen precious few of these movies. Of all the movies in the major categories, I saw, ROTK, Lost In Translation, Pirates, Finding Nemo.

And my votes will probably almost all go toward ROTK. The ones I feel strongly about are:

Best Picture: ROTK

Director: Peter Jackson(!)

Animated: Finding Nemo

Score: ROTK

I'd also like to add:

Documentary Feature: Capturing the Friedmans

Animated Short: Gone Nutty (this is on the Ice Age DVD and it's a riot)

I put a "!" after director because, while it might not be fair, I think PJ deserves the award for the trilogy as a whole. I think his achievement is staggering and deserves to be honored with a director award.

Best Picture- "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King"

Best Director - Peter Jackson ("Lord of the Rings: Return of the King")

Best Actor - Johnny Depp ("Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl"

Best Actress- Charlize Theron ("Monster")

Best Supp Actor- Ken Watanabe ("The Last Samurai")

Best Supp Actress- Ren?e Zellweger ("Cold Mountain")

Best Original Screenplay- "In America"

Best Adapted Screenplay - "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King"

Best Cinematography- "Master & Commander: Far Side of the World"

Best Visual Effects - "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl"

Best Art Direction- "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King"

Best Costume Design - "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King"

Best Makeup- "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King"

Best Sound Mixing - "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King"

Best Original Song - "Into the West" ("Lord of the Rings: Return of the King")

Best Original Score - Howard Shore ("Lord of the Rings: Return of the King")

Best Animated Film- "Finding Nemo"

I know that I made some odd picks (especially for a hardcore LOTR fan), but I think that some of the work on "Pirates of the Caribbean" (particularly Depp as Jack Sparrow and the absolute seamlessness of the effects when the pirates move in and out of moonlight) made this a solid choice. Of course, I am among the minority that just did not care for "Lost in the Translation" but did like "The Last Samurai" (particularly the incredible performance by Ken Wanatabe). But, I know that puts me in the minority.

Shame we didn't have a site chat so those of us stuck at home tonight couldn't shoot the shit during the ceremony ;).

I don't care for the Oscars as a film yardstick by any margin, which was cemented for me when Titanic got all the awards that L.A. Confidential should have picked up :P. However, the ceremony tends to be a decent watch and rooting for your favorite films is fun.

Normally I would have seen all the Best Picture nominees at the very least, but this year has been really rough on me for spare time. Anyway, I'm hoping that Bill Murray gets the Best Actor for Lost In Translation, though I won't be upset if Johnny Depp takes it home too. And Peter Jackson should get something just for recognition of his awesome achievement.

That's my big problem with the Oscars, they often don't reward the truly amazing films that are going to stand the test of time.

For anybody looking for a good ongoing commentary, I heartily recommend James Berardinelli's ReelViews site. He's one of the net's top movie reviewers, for those who don't know, and he does a magnificent job covering the ceremony each year. He updates during commercials and it's well worth checking in on if you're a sad loser like me ;).

I'm gonna put my rear end on the line here and say that I'd have no problem with Master and Commander taking the best film Oscar. I liked it just as much as Return of the King.

As far as the other 3 movies, I haven't seen them, but I want to see Lost in Translation pretty badly. I doubt it will win because I don't think the Academy has forgiven Sofia Coppola for her turgid performance in Godfather III.

Oh yeah, I forgot... Sean Astin WAS robbed.

That tribute to those who died this past year was horribly depressing. To see so many talented people pass on, and worst of all younger people who have not even reached thier prime, is just ashame.

SIDENOTE:

Mark, I think you are a grouch ;) The show has been really great this year.

Crystal: "I can't wait to see his tax audit." :lmfao:
