Mark E
What can I say? It's hard to hold out much hope for this based on the suckitude achieved by all successive X-Com sequels, but I still have a small prayer that this game might turn out to be several shades of awesome like the original game. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/ufoaft...ew_6072650.html

Mark E
i still play the original x-com It's one of the reasons I'd like to have a dedicated DOS-based computer. That and the LucasArts/Sierra adventure games (though ScummVM takes care of most LucasArts titles awesomely). Few things are quite so fun as chewing up the produce section of a grocery store trying to bag a pesky alien .
reeldeal
I just started playing the "unofficial" sequel to betrayal at krondor. I should really look into picking up those old adventure games. I was just thinking about driving through Lytton on family trips and giggling thinking i was somewhere famous. only in my geek mind i guess... Mark E
thinking about driving through Lytton The worst part is, I totally know what you're getting at. So you're not alone in the geekiness . I imagine finding the jail and going "Hey, the courthouse isn't just across the street like it's supposed to be!" Are you talking about Betrayal At Antara, btw? Let me know how it is, I've been curious. I heard it was no match for BAK, which wouldn't surprise me, given how amazing that game was. Sad that both unofficial and official sequels were considered rather subpar.
Chris F
All this talk about X-Com is going to cause mt to go home, install VMware and Win98 SE with it, and play X-Com until my eyes BLEED. Thanks guys!
Cathartic
Hey Pharm, I played both BaK and BaA some time back. I personally enjoyed both of them, though I could see where some people might have certain criticisms with one or the other. The graphics in BaA, by today's standards, are obviously going to seem extremely subpar - but that is to be expected. I recall them being at least on-par with BaK though. I seem to recall locking up once or twice in Antara due to some kind of clipping issue. Not a huge deal, but it is certainly frustrating to have to reload your last saved game because you're paralyzed, causing you to lose say 15-20 minutes worth of effort. The storylines themselves are pretty entertaining from what I recall and the gameplay is decent. If you play it, let me know what you think. My memory has become a bit fuzzy after 4-5 years. Let me know how it is, I've been curious. I heard it was no match for BAK, which wouldn't surprise me, given how amazing that game was. Sad that both unofficial and official sequels were considered rather subpar. Ha, i never even realized how cryptic my message was. I think I had written something about Police Quest above that and then deleted it but left in my after thought. Imagine how excited you'd get if you were driving around lytton and a red MG went running through a red light, you just know the chick driving that car would be hot and slutty! BaA is having issues with my system. For some reason it wouldn't work on my desktop (win98), well it would work but the colors were all fluorescent and I couldn't see where i was going. So i tried it out on my work pc (nt4) and i got the same problem. For some reason my laptop (win2000pro) runs it perfectly. Unfortunately I'm hooked on KOTOR and haven't had a chance to play through it. I picked it up on ebay for about 2bucks, so if you were a fan of the original it's got to be worth 2bucks to see what this is all about. i think i'm going to go try to find Return to Krondor and maybe X-Com2, which I found to be fun - just a touch difficult. What's this VMware?
Mark E
you just know the chick driving that car would be hot and slutty! Not to mention she'd give you the number of the Mayor's wife . X-Com: TFTD is a brutal game, difficulty-wise. Not that the first one was a slouch, but the second is harsh. I eventually had to let it die since it was just becoming impossible to keep making forward progress. The first one's way better anyway, doubly so once you get geared up with the flying suits, plasma grenades (hello gas tanks!), and heavy artillery. And it has all those great locations. They just need to remake the first one with the turn-based gameplay and a beefed up graphics set with new areas like universities and such. Actually, fixing the AI wouldn't be a bad idea either . Mark E
Hey all, I decided to go take a look at the game they mentioned in today's Penny Arcade strip and it turns out it's a squad based PBEM game a la X-Com. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks rather freakin' neat and might be of interest to some of you who haven't heard of it yet. http://www.lasersquadnemesis.com/
secretvampire
Very interesting, I had not heard about this title, and I am a huge fan of the original game. All this talk about X-Com is going to cause mt to go home, install VMware and Win98 SE with it, and play X-Com until my eyes BLEED. A little off-topic. I have an extra computer sitting around (celeron 600) I would love to turn into a machine I could play retro (and I'm talking going way back to the mid-80's games like Wing Commander, Kings Quest, etc.) games on but also have available for web surfing and stuff like word processing. I was thinking of setting up a dual-boot system with Windows 98 SE and MS-DOS 6.0. Is there a better way to do this than what I am thinking of? And it happens to be developed by the guys behind X-Com etc. It's been on the go for a while, good to see them getting more attention.
