xPieter
Forgive me because I'm not sure how to explain this. It's just a small thing, but I like it, so I'm a suggestin' it. If you check out this screen grab: I think it would be cool if LCVG had one of those bookmark icons like Apple's sites or VersionTracker. You can see in the address bar that LCVG just has the default blue globe as its icon. Perhaps Ed or some other Mac Addict will be able to better describe or even be able to create the icon. Even an orange globe instead of blue would help make the site unique and stand out from the crowd.
kelley
Great Idea! I'll talk to Ed about it.
rustyjaw
Oh...there's a name for those, but I can't quite remember it... Umm...I know they're PNG files, and they go in the root directory of the site. But for the life of me I can't recall the name (the name of the file is always the same, the browser just looks for that file when loading the site). Anyway, I can try to come up with something. The logo won't work in that small of a space..
rustyjaw
OK, I looked it up. They're called favicons and they are not PNGs but Windows Icon files ".ico" They are 16 x 16 pixels...
Romier S
How about using the grey circles with the orange outline on the new forum design as the icon Ed? I think they look rather spiffy. Perhaps we can add a shine effect to the .ico file for a more tasteful look?

Although making it look shiny and depressed in the space of 16 pixels might not be possible, but I'll give it a shot.
adamsappel
Ed, can you post how you add this to the HTML? I've been trying in vain to figure out how to put those in the website I master.

All you need to do is put the file in the root directory of the site, it should be called 'favicon.ico' and I think the browser will do the rest. Robot Monkey
You can make a 16x16 and wrap in a 32x32. I was about to make an orange circle with a black border a couple days ago, when I realized that I don't have any icon editing software. Too lazy to go look for some. Anyway, more info on the favicon is here at WebMonkey. Hey, good name! EDIT FOR ALLEN from WebMonkey: Now, log into your server and put up that icon! The icon should be placed into the main directory (usually "www"), as well as any other directories containing HTML files that you think users might bookmark. Also, don't forget to put an icon in any of the other directory locations that you referenced in your fancy JavaScript code. If you changed any of the code in your HTML pages using the snippets on the previous page, you'll want to save and upload those too. -j
adamsappel
Thanks! I'll try it soon.
Robot Monkey
BTW, Allen, they suggest putting a link rel tag in your html if you decide to use a differently named favicon. In our case, it would be easier since we just put the reference in the board wrapper, but I don't know if it would save you any time. Check out that article for more information. It seems a little dated, but I believe the information is current. -j
JoeyN
they also have something like this for other web browsers as well. HTF has one and so does gameconsoleskins.com. capt
iainl
IE supports them, definitely. Which explains why they are Windows .ico files - a strange choice if this was a purely Safari thing.
Robot Monkey
I'm pretty sure all the major browsers support favicons.

There's a 32x32 and a 16x16 in that icon. There's also 256 color versions of each size in the icon, but they're the same as the 16 color. That's just a test, I meant to take it down after looking at it. I'll do that now, actually. I'll put it back up (and make it work for the forums as well) if I get an okay from the owners. -j
merlot
Seaking of these little icons, does anyone know why IE stops displaying them after a set time period? They eventually default back to the IE icon :?
Robot Monkey
My impression is that although the favicon has been around for a while now, browser implementation is imperfect. Firefox, in particular, is pretty inconsistant in its use of the favicon. Sometimes it decides that it will use a certain favicon and that's that. So for example, my Firefox decided to use HTF's "house" favicon for LCVG (!), although it still uses the default on tabs. I'm sure it would get rid of it if I deleted all temp files, but it remains an example of iffy implementation. -j
Kain rising
Yep, I think the D-pad make sense - nice and classic The favorite icons also go away if you empty the IE cache, I think. And I've noticed the same thing about Firefox being a little wonky on Favorite Icons... for some reason, my web email site is stuck with the Google icon :? kelley
In terms of modern web browser features, IE is lacking far behind. Supposedly in the next service pack for Windows XP microsoft will be putting in a lot of updates for IE. Just switch to FireFox, you'll be alot happier. Graeme
I tried, I wasn't happier at all.
Robot Monkey
Try dumping your cache and checking here again, Pieter.
xPieter
I selected "Empty Cache" from the Safari menu and reloaded, but no change. It's still the blue globe.
Robot Monkey
You might need to bookmark it to get it to work after a cache dump. Or remove the bookmark, cache dump, reload, then bookmark again. Like I said before, browsers are pretty inconsistent with the favicon, so I'm not sure I can help beyond that (close to worthless) suggestion. -j
adamsappel
Thanks for the favicon help, I added one to my site.
