matt
So I finally got around to getting my xbox repaired. Well, sort of. I had a little trouble with Metal Arms, and there were freeze ups more often and in more games than usual. It was all starting to really piss me off, and I figured it was time to see what that extended warranty I purchased from Best Buy was all about. So I call up best buy and find out it?s actually a product replacement plan. Interesting. You send them the defective merchandise and they send you a voucher in the amount you paid for the merchandise originally. You can then use that voucher towards anything you want in the store. Not bad, except I?d be without my xbox for three fucking weeks. That?s the part they fail to mention when selling you the replacement plan. Anyway, I thought since Best Buy was going to deprive me of my xbox for 3 weeks or so, then they could provide me with a loner. They have this wonderful 30 day return policy for most of their merchandise, including consoles. So I went and bought one two days ago. I got all my game saves moved over, so I?m good to go for now. Just sucks that all my ripped music will have to be re-ripped. And I?ll have to move my game saves yet one more time. Oh well, the bonus is that I paid $200 originally for the xbox, so I?ll have $20 to throw at a new game. Oh yeah, and the problem with Metal Arms was my old xbox, as I haven?t had any problems yet with the new one.
Buck
Glad to hear you're getting it taken care of, Matt. My original Xbox has started to develop a problem reading disks. It doesn't give me a DDE, but you can here it struggle from time to time (I've adjusted the laser on it). So, I'm thinking of modding it, giving me 2 modded boxes :tu:, and buying a new one. I'd like to wait for the new bundle and a price drop before doing it, so hopefully my Xbox will cooperate.
ant1
Why not just switch out the drive instead?
JoeyN
My original Xbox became a Dirty Disc error nightmare. Glad i bought a 2nd one. I had bought the extended warrenty from microsoft directly. They sent me a prepaid shipping box. Sent the thing to them on Friday. They got it on Monday. I had it back here Yesterday(thursday). That was pretty fast. Seems like the replaced the HD, DVD drive and the inside fan as the first time i turned it on, it sounded like a plane was taking off. Let it run for a little bit and the sound went down a little. At least it works capt
Big Daddy Bling Bling
Hey buck, got a link to any tutorials on how to adjust the laser? I'm on my second Thompson drive and it's been giving DDEs. Luckily they're rare while playing, but I have to boot up my Xbox several times to read many of the new games. matt
Update: I received my voucher from Best Buy in the amount of $216 yesterday. I sent my old decrepit xbox on the 17th. Not bad. Today I went and used the voucher to purchase a $149 xbox and SC:PT. They gave me a gift card for $0.01 in change. I came home, got the receipt for the xbox I purchased from them three weeks ago to replace the decrepit one, and headed back to best buy. Returned the xbox I had just purchased, no trouble. Problem solved (I'm at the boss of chapter 10 in Nija Gaiden, ain't gonna start over now). All in all I'm happy. Essentially I got SC:PT for free. Can't beat that. Now I just need to catch up with everybody else.
Failsafe
Glad to hear it's a happy ending. That's great that the price drop worked to such an advantage and you were able to get Splinter Cell for nothing. Now you've just got to practise those multi-player maps or pay the price by getting your ass kicked. Hmmm, how long before we start a Pandora Short Bus League? Saurav
My Thomson drive improved after I adusted the laser, but it would still lock up too frequently for me. Finally I ended up killing my DVD drive because I stupidly unplugged it with the power turned on. I then picked up a Philips drive off of eBay, put that in, and things have been infinitely better ever since then. DDE nightmare - that's a good description of what my Thomson drive had turned into. Adjusting the laser requires a bit of a steady hand and a multimeter, but replacing the DVD drive is as simple as changing hardware in a PC. It does cost more though.
