Chatakinns
Price drop article Most of us gamers know this already since we have been buying consoles and games for most of our lives. But I did find the info on the " Big 3 " interesting. We missed out on the price drop on X-Box by a mere 2 weeks when it went to $179.00. We seem to need a new PS2 as we have worn ours out now and I am waiting to see when and if they do follow Microsoft with a price drop soon after. Mark E
Well, bloody unlikely to see the PS2 drop any further until the PS3 comes out, I'd wager, unless this makes the Box take a huge jump. I mean, Sony has no threat this generation from MicroSoft or Nintendo, we all know it. The article addresses this as such and it's no big surprise, we knew that too . All very disappointing, to be honest. I don't really feel that Sony has made a single innovation this generation, or even attempted to, while MicroSoft and Nintendo are at least trying new things. Ech, okay, maybe the EyeToy. There needs to be a serious level of competition to push companies, which is why I'm a lot more pleased to see MicroSoft in the console biz now than I previously was. But Sony did this last gen too, they held the price of the PSOne high for way longer than was really necessary just because they sold so many. I guess it makes sense, but it sucks for us low-income consumers. Fine with me though, I don't have my sights on the PS2 for my next system anyway . JoeyN
If sony dosnt lower the price it would be a stupid move on there part. Why let microsoft get more people to buy x-box at the lower price and maybe get people to like it and buy xbox 2 instead of ps3 when they are released Also I started a thread about this in the X-box forum earlier this morning capt
Chatakinns
I agree ( with Pharmboy ). Sony ( to me anyway ) seems to be following Nintendo in the " We are #1 and we have no worries " kind of thing. I wanted to cut and paste some of the article, but I am never sure how much is too much, so I felt safer just going with the link. Sony does have some great games out, and they have such an extensive library of games available since the PS2 is backwards compatible, but that is not quite enuff in my book. You can't rely on past glory forever. And with Microsoft and it's jolly green giant looming in the background, Sony may very well have some stiff competition in the coming years. Already X-Box has been rumored to be the developers console of choice to bring new games out on. I don't know how true this is, but compared to Nintendo's limited library of games, ( GOOD games, but not a lot of them ) for a new console in the market, they are getting our gaming dollars hand over fist. Mark E
I don't think Nintendo will really grow out of its niche setting in the next couple of gens, to be honest, though they may surprise me. It's fine by me though, they have enough games I want . The real problem with Sony is that they are tenuously supported by third-parties held by exclusivity deals. That's just a question of contracts and money, period. MicroSoft has Bungie, and Nintendo has Nintendo, SK, etc. Let's face it, Nintendo has gotten by this entire system on its first and second party software. It just seems that with the price drop coming and going 'oh, no worries to us, we're kings', they're seriously short-sighting the game market. They had a huge head start this time around, and if they don't next time and they manage to street with a system that's inferior to the other two, I think sales will start reflecting that. While this console war was more like a mild border skirmish, I think the next round is going to actually be something interesting. Bah, just merge Nintendo and Microsoft and make my dreams come true .

Nooooo !! I would not like to see that happen. I think competition is good for the market. If anything it can be a push for the Big 3 to do bigger and better than they have in the past. I remember when Nintendo and Rave released the first Conker's Bad Fur Day. I was floored. I was like " No way Nintendo had anything to do with this game. They are the kiddie console. " :wtf: I was really happy when GC came out with Eternal Darkness and while I loved Resident Evil on the PS, I was kind of glad to see what Nintendo had done with the games. For you wrestling fans out there ... what has happened now that Vince has the biggest 2 names in the business under one roof ? Has wrestling gotten any better ? IMHO it has gotten worse. There is no competition anymore.
General Zot
Another 2c - If MS drops the xbox price to $149, PS2 will do the same within 2 weeks. Sony isn't stupid, they won't allow a price gap with their biggest threatening competitor. Plus the PS2 actually makes money at $179, the xbox loses it. So if MS wants to lose more money, Sony just shrugs and trims their profits on hardware sales. They have much less to lose. The use of M$, $ony, or any other abbreviation using such symbols is not tolerated on these boards
danger9777
I'm curious to see how Nintendo reacts to these price cuts. While they would certainly still have a nice $50 edge on the PS2 and XBOX, I wonder if they will try another game bundle on new Gamecubes just to try and steal some of the XBOX's and PS2's thunder on their new lower prices. What does everyone think?

What does everyone think? I thought there was still somewhat of a hardware shortage caused by the last price drop, is this no longer the case? If so, I can't see them sweetening the deal too much more for the Cube just yet. I know people in some areas can't find Cubes, I see them all the time though. Josh
As far as I know, the Nintendo "hardware shortage" was caused by Nintendo literally stopping production of them for a while. Regarding the price drops, we hear this literally every three months. At this point they're going for the late-adopters and second-comers (people who need to re-buy like Leslie). There won't be much base-building anymore, so everything from here on out is gravy. Sony won this generation hands-down, and there's nothing Microsoft can do about that. They'll add some numbers with a price drop, especially when it comes to a parent deciding between two consoles and seeing the $30 price difference, but in the end, whoever wanted a PS2 already has one. The Daisy
I would think we could see a price drop to $79 for the GBASP as well as the Gamecube. Both of those devices for $150 would be a sweet bundle. Glen
Romier S
I have a reliable source that contacted me and advised that the Xbox price drop is indeed official and will go into effect nationwide next week (Officially on Tuesday March 30th). 149.99 will of course be the new price point. JoeyN
Yep the price is gonna drop very soon as gamestop here got the new price for the used xbox systems . $119.99. i saw the stickers myself as i picked up a ps2 today and they cut me a break as they know the systems are gonna drop . capt
RudyN
The Microsoft rep came into my work Friday night and said that they got official word that the price was dropping to $149 and would be announced within the next 2 weeks.
dogbert
Why do Microsoft continually handle these price cuts so badly? Every time they leave it open like this for "sometime in the next few weeks", they allow their competitors, namely Sony, get a jump on them by announcing an immediate pricecut days before Microsoft formally announce the details of theirs, making it appear that Microsoft are reacting to Sony instead of the other way around... Graeme
Hehe, that always seems to happen. I remember when I was at E3 in 96, everyone knew that Sega was going to drop the price of the Saturn at the show with everyone wondering if Sony would follow along.... they waited till day 2 to make their announcement and Sony did it on day 1.
