The Daisy
I'm contemplating switching to Dish Network based on the deal that Allsat.com is running. Up to 4 TV's, up to 2 HDTV receivers and two DVR units... What do people here have? I'm just curious about people that have Dish vs. DirecTV and what drove them to that. Thanks, Glen
dogbert
We have DirecTV, and my in-laws have Dish. We chose DirecTV for the DirecTivo, an interface we like, and the selection of channels. We don't like the Dish interface - it seems clumsier & slower than DirecTV, though I'm not sure how much of that's down to teh particular units my mother-in-law has. No idea on the HD side of things. adamsappel
Depending on price, that seems like a hell of a deal. I used to have Dish (I have Comcast cable now, so I could get broadband), and I chose it as they had a few more HDTV channels (at that time, I don't know about now) and Dish said they were never going to downgrade HD signals to regular quality for certain broadcasts (concerts, sports, etc), and DirectTV allowed that they might. It might be moot which one you choose, as there are are always rumblings about a merger, but it's usually derailed by monopoly concerns. Angel P
Two reasons why I chose DirecTV: 1) At the time, my local cable provider (Cablevision) didn't have the YES network. 2) DirecTiVo. I had a standalone unit and thought a TiVo built into the satellite receiver would provide better picture quality.
Bruce B
It was a no brainer for me. Direct Tv. 1) Yes Network-Yankee games 2) MLB package 3) NFL Sunday ticket
kelley
DirecTiVo is a gift from the gods! My parents had DirecTV within the month is was widely avaliable, and we've all been with them since.
JTello
1. I have DirecTV and a DirecTV Tivo. 2. I liked the channel selection better (more channels). And it was less expensive. Much cheaper than cable with all of cable's little reoccuring costs that add up monthly. 3. NFL Sunday ticket! 4. Isn't Dish Network having issues with ESPN? I've seen a few commercials by ESPN urging viewers to complain to Dish, though I don't remember what the complaint was. No ESPN, if true = Would mean no Dish for me. I thought Dish was having problems with channels owned by Viacom, like MTV, Spike and so on. JTello
**Joel Shrugs** Dunno, but whichever, just one more reason to go with DirecTV or another alternative. I'm not against Dish, I just don't know anyone who has ever had it, aside from the few mentions here, and that must say something for the service. adamsappel
It's probably a regional thing. I see far more Dish satellite dishes than DirectTV's in my area.

The Daisy
From what I've seen on the Dish site, they have ESPN HD, Discovery HD, HDNET, and HDNET movies. BTW, the Viacom issue with Dish has been taken care of from what I've read. Glen
adamsappel
I received a brochure from Voom, a new competitor to DirectTV and Dish, with more HDTV channels than either, but it seems a bit expensive and the regular channel line-up is not as robust. Audio Revolution article.
exile
Voom was reviewed in the latest sound and vision and they weren't too kind to it. It's too early to jump on their bandwagon for some part time HD. I have Directv and can't say I've had issues at all. I love my Directivo and it's quite solid as service. The pricing is quite a bit cheaper than cable for me.
DataTox
I had Dish from March 2000 until about a month ago. I had some major issues with existing hardware, new hardware installation (5 months just to get an installer to put up a new dish) and poor customer service that finally drove me away. I now have DirecTV with a DirecTivo and am loving it. The dual-tuner and interface are sweet and I do not regret the switch for a minute. We chose Dish years ago over cable for obvious reasons and over DirecTV due to their cheaper package prices. However, we are now on the same basic package with DirecTV and am paying a bit less. I'd say go with DTV, but I am also a jaded former Dish customer, so my opinion may not be the best to base a decision on. Chris
The Daisy
Well, I still haven't made up my mind on this. I've just had a few reasons in the past few weeks that make me really think about keeping my programming with DirecTV. Hopefully I'll make my decision in the next few days. Beer Monkey
DirecTV is bitskimming/recompressing their HD channels, check threads at AVSForum. I am lucky to have good cable and the following HD channels over cable: NBC ABC CBS PBS (x2) HBO SHO DiscoveryHD InHD InHD2 HDNet HDNet Movies I would have to buy a $500 stb and get a rooftop antenna to get HD locals in my area with DirecTV. If I did switch, I'd go to DISH (but I don't want an antenna).
Bruce B
Had Direct TV installed Friday and so far so good. Has turned me into an High Def Discovery Channel geek. Not as impressed with ESPN HD, does not seem to have the clarity of Discovery. The real thrill will be when the baseball package kicks in. Carlucci
Hey, I just heard that XM Satellite Radio is coming to DirecTV, and I am really excited about this: Channel 822 - Cinemagic (Movie Soundtracks) Man, I hope this lives up to my expectations. I had written Music Choice a couple of letters asking for a movie soundtrack channel with no luck. The complete lineup is here: http://www.directv.com/see/pdf/XM_channel_lineup.pdf what the heck is "Deep Tracks"? They call it 'deep album rock'. We're also getting an electronica and Underground Dance channel. The switch to XM goes into effect on 11/15. Carlos.

Bruce B
Just ordered the directv hd dvr. I guess they have been in short supply so the install isn't for a month. I currently have both Directv and Time Warner, but I'm going to get rid of Time Warner. They're prices just keep rising for shitty service. Going to move my current hd receiver to the bedroom and put the dvr on the main tv. Also ordered 3 regular receivers for the other tvs.
Camp
I've been living with DirecTV and the new HD-DVR for about 2 months now and I've come to the conclusion that it sucks. The interface is restrictive, it either records every episode of a program or just not the particular episode I wanted, the HD picture quality is horribly compressed...I could go on and on. Hopefully the DVR (HDR20?) is upgradeable. I'd like to see a software fix applied.
Dan B.
I'm hanging on to my old HR10-250 Tivo-enabled HD-DVR until they put up more HD in MPEG 4 for this reason...the lack of Tivo software sucks. Maybe the HD picture will improve once they start using those new sats as well...I hope it does.
