Bruce B
Had a tremendously frustrating encounter at Best Buy the other day trying to purchase Direct Tv. In speaking with an incredibly inept representative, who had tried to charge me for the dish(included in promotion), and the installation(inluded in promotion), he asked me if I had a DVI connection on my tv, to which I responded "no, I have component cables only hookup", he grabbed a $90 set of Monster cables off the display and started to ring them up. Never did he ask me if I had a set of my own to use, or did I want to purchase the ones he grabbed. He just started ringing them up! I was ballistic already from his ineptitude, took the credit card from his hand, and walked out of the store. He also had told me that the ONLY cables that would work were Monster cables! I did go back the next day and purchased it from a different, more knowledgable salesperson. We dont have many retailers around here so I didnt have alot of choices. I explained to this rep my dissatisfaction, and told him I'm sure they promote to their employees to "accessorize", but to not even ask the customer if they want that product is ridiculous, and also to imply that those were the only brand of cables that would work. Am I wrong here?
kelley
no you are not wrong. I would have corrected the salesman and made him ring up your order exactly how you wanted it.
Bruce B
I just think of all the people that fall prey to believing that those specific cables are the only ones that would work. Ridiculous.
Cyberwoo
I would have ripped him a new one. I would have voiced my frusteration, explained the error of his ways by stating the facts and making him look like an idiot in front of everyone, and then walk out. No way in hell I'd go back and give that store my $. I cant stand Best Buy, Circuit City, etc for those reasons. Those stores are all about taking advantage of customers who dont know any better. Anyone that knows what he/she wants knows to avoid these stores like the plaugue.
Sam P
You also have my vote of support, Bruce. Best Buy Canada (ie Future Shop) tried to pull the same "Monster Cables are the only type that work" on me when I bought my TV. Every non-enthusiast TV buyer will probably fall for that. merlot
Ahhh, good 'ole Best Buy. Such a love/hate relationship. I find if I deal with anyone other than the cashier, it'll be on the hate side. But I love it for it's DVD selections...

I'd demand to see the supervisor and make the supervisor sad. And I'd keep bitching and going up the ladder. The sales person might be a schmuck for making the claim, but I want to be sure that there isn't a climate that allows that sort of thing to happen. Thus the bitching up the ladder. Finally, if I wasn't satisfied with their response I'd certainly consider filing a complaint with BBB and my state Attorney General. But that's just me. In retrospect, youre absolutely correct in your approach. My problem was I was engulfed in the heat of the moment, felt my blood pressure rising, and decided that it was best for everyone if I just split. Guest Bryan
Bruce, You should have knocked the cable out of his hand and challenged him to a fight. That's what Kelley would do. Kelley's Ed Wood Adventure
JTello
Wow, messed up! Sorry Bruce! I would have requested a manager and brought it to his attention, altough it'd probably be an hour before the manager actually responded. But you probably did the best thing, you kept your cool walked away from potential confrontation,... and then settled the probelm later when you were cooled down. I don't know if I could have been that restrained. As mentioned already, it's a good thing you're an informed consumer. So, how do you like the DirecTV, have you set it up or are you having it done be a tech?
Bruce B
So, how do you like the DirecTV, have you set it up or are you having it done be a tech? The installation was included and is suppose to come Friday. I will immediately order the baseball & High Def package. On a side note, I ended up ordering some Acoustic Research component cables on sale for $35 instead of paying $90 for overpriced Monster cables.
