Robot Monkey
I never played Tecmo Bowl and I know that it's hugely popular. What's the draw? What did it do better than other game of its era (or now, for that matter)? -j
The Daisy
Gameplay, Gameplay, Gameplay. I've been playing this game since 1991, and will probably play this game until I die, or my NES does. The game itself has a very simple play interface. You have two buttons. When passing on offense, one button to change the receiver that you will pass to, and the other to throw the ball. When running you have one button to break tackles if you're "wrapped up" and other than that... you use the "Tecmo Weave" to avoid tacklers. Honestly, the computer doesn't present the greatest challenge to a good Tecmo player, and you'll typically put up about 500 to 600 yards a game after you play it for a while. If you look around the internet, you'll find people that are playing online leagues for the game, as well as running tournaments in local bars, etc. Honestly, throughout all of my sports gaming that I've done throughout my life Tecmo is the best sports game that I've ever played against another person. It's definately a personal preference though. Glen
BelPowerslave
Yeah, no doubt...the gameplay on Tecmo Bowl was just amazing...really friendly. That, along with Genesis Cyberball and the first Joe Montana Football are my three fav. football games of all time... Bel
JTello
-Ditto what Geln said! I would add that Baseball Stars for the NES kicked serious ass too, that would actually get my vote for #1, with Temco a close 2nd.
HoolieMan
I'll add another vote for Baseball stars as #1 and Tecmo Bowl as #2.
BelPowerslave
No votes for Tengen's RBI series on the Genesis!? Shame be unto thou!!!! Bel
Thrillho
I beleive I may be talking about Super Tecmo bowl here, but they were so very close in gameplay I consider them one, Super tecmo just added more plays. But the thing about them is in my opinion two words Bo Jackson....simply the best computerized athlete ever created, utterly unstoppable!!! Also how can you guys forget about Double Dribble, Probably the game that was the biggest source of S#$t talking ever. Nothing would beat having the Dunk scene come on and your buddy talking smack only to have the dunk Clang off the rim!!!
The Daisy
I was talking about TSB in my post. Most people refer to that as the peak of all that is Tecmo. I'm a bit partial to TSB for the SNES though as well. I have incredibly fond memories for Blades of Steel also Glen
foogledricks
I loved all things Tecmo back in the day. Tecmo wrestling, volleyball, basketball, baseball... they all had those cinemas like in Ninja Gaiden.
JFo
You know, it's not a stretch to say that I'm not a fan of sports games. For the most part, I hate 'em! I can't stands 'em! Still, I remember loving Tecmo Bowl. I think a lot of it has to do with its simplicity. It sound so clich? but it truly was easy to learn, difficult to master. You could sit down with a buddy, play a few rounds and never get tired of hearing the game go, "HUT!! HUT!! HUT!! HUT!!"
JohnEBGood
Bo Jackson....simply the best computerized athlete ever created, utterly unstoppable!!! I would run the ball all the way back to the 1 justy so that Bo could run the other 99 yds for a TD. He was and still is the greates player ever created for any soprts game. People still to this day talk to him about that.
The Daisy
I've always wanted to talk to the creators of the game to see how they came upon the ratings for that game. There are some players, like Bo, that are just unstoppable when they were in the peak of their careers. There are others though, like Bob Nelson-the defensive lineman for the Packers. I'd just be interested as to where they got the ratings. Glen
