Farcry: Instincts

Ubisoft has announced the console version of Farcry. Being developed by Ubi's Montreal studio best known for their work on the original Splinter Cell and the recent Prince of Peria. For those of you not able to play the PC game this should make an excellent alternative as it is most definitely in the hands of a capable development team:

Far Cry Instincts will feature all of the PC game's wide open environments and signature locales, but will also add all-new gameplay scenarios requiring different strategies and survival tactics to complete. No specific platforms or release dates for Far Cry Instincts have been announced at this time. We'll bring you more information on the game as soon as it becomes available.

There are two screenies there as well. As you can see the "soft" lighting technique used in the Splinter Cell games is being used in the console version as well.

PS2 and Xbox according to the Gamespot article.

Definitely enjoying it on the PC, I'll be anxious to see how the consoles handle it.

Ah, I see. For right now I think thats just assumption on Gamespots part (not to say it wont be accurate) but considering the report (and announcement) noted no platform I'll wait to see what Ubi announces. (I'd be curious to see what a PS2 port of the game would look like, I would imagine a good bit of the level design etc. would need to be changed).

In fact, Official Xbox Magazine mentioned last year that this was in development for Xbox by Ubi Soft Montreal. (it was either the December or Holiday issue IIRC-the one that had the games of 2004 in it)

Lookin' forward to it, as I've officially given up gaming on PCs. (they are evil)

:) Well...they can certainly be a royal pain in the ass sometimes. This config isn't no good, that config doesn't work, this conflicts with that and that has a problem with the drivers... :bang:

Xbox on; Halo II in tray, home theater cranked up, bliss... :tu:

Some new screenshots of FarCry running on the Xbox. Ubi looks to have done a nice overhaul on the graphics to get it running on the Xbox. Doesn't look quite as stunning as the PC game, but it's looking very good in it's own right. Take a look:

I'm VERY much looking forward to this game! My laptop was barely able to run the pc version, and that was at very mediocre settings.

From what I've read, I really like the changes they've made to the story for the Xbox version and, the graphics on this are still alot more impressive than what I could run on the pc.

It also sounds like they've kept the killer AI intact. Thank you, Ubi!!!

Can't wait!!!! :tu

In a none too suprising move, Ubi has cancelled the PS2 version of FarCry Instincts. Instead they are emphasizing the exclusive nature of the Xbox version. You can read the full report here:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/06/28/news_6128282.html

t's time for them to open up another box of Kleenex, but for entirely different reasons. Ubisoft today sent out a note saying that "Far Cry Instincts will be available exclusively for the Microsoft Xbox." (emphasis added.) Translation: the PS2 version has been canceled.

I wonder if it was due to Microsoft paying for it to be exclusive or, was the PS2 unable to deliver a decently playable version?

I would make a guess that it was the latter. I doubt Ubi wanted to invest the time it would take to get the game running on the PS2 considering the apparent trouble they had porting to the Xbox.

Any news of something coming out for the PC that's similar to this new Xbox version?

I never played the pc game since my old pc isn't capable. I'm thinking of picking up the pc version instead, now that I have a machine that can run it but, from what little I know of the pc version, this Xbox version sounds more fun?

Any of you Far Cry veterans able to give some input? Is this new version drastically different that the older one? Which one would you recommend? If there is an expansion/patch/whatever coming out for the pc, that would give you what Instincts has, I think I might wait and pick up the pc version instead.

Some more news on FarCry:

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/637/637527p1.html

Ubisoft announced today that Stephen Dorff will provide the voice of Jack Carver, the hero of Far Cry Instincts. Gamers may already know Dorff from his role in films such as Blade, FearDotCom, and Alone in the Dark.

The publisher also revealed today that composer Paul Haslinger, who created scores for Minority Report, Tomb Raider, and Underworld, contributed original music to Far Cry Instincts.

Instincts is sounding pretty cool on the Xbox. That map editor looks incredibly easy-to-use, and that's the way it should be. I think I'm gonna pick up this version, although I still haven't finished the PC version yet...but I'm going to get around to it before the end of summer, I hope.
