secretvampire
My first year of Live subscription is rapidly running out. I'm curious, does anybody know of the most economical way to renew?
blackcalx
When I bought my Live subscription I purchased a Live V2 kit (this was after the V3 kit came out) online for around $40 dollars. I suspect you could find a renewal card, without the game and headset, for a lesser price if you looked at the right places. I think I used Google's Froogle tool to find the best price. secretvampire
I was curious about this....so the old cards from these sets do work? They don't expire? And you can add them onto an existing subscription?
rustyjaw
Mine's going to be coming up soon too...on whatever date the 1 year anniversary of MotoGP2 is on.

Note well: I don't know whether the old cards still work. My suggestion is to pick up the v2 kit from a store where you can return it if the code doesn't work. -j

If it is unclear, I will do like Robot Monkey says and buy it somewhere where I can return it if necessary!
JTello
Last November I got a version one nice and cheap and it worked fine. But like everyone else, I'd be hesitant to promise it'll work for you,... but it did for me and many others. But the cheapest way to renew,... buy Splinter Cell PT and hope you too find a free free year's subscription inside the box! That's how I just got my new one! :tu:
Graeme
Keep returning "defective" copies of Pandora Tomorrow until you hit on a 12 month subscription card Or make friends with an employee at EB who has to gut a whole bunch of em. The old subscription kits do expire, but MS was accepting the codes well after the expiry date. I entered a code from a V2 kit in January without issue (sorta). One word of warning with the older codes though is that they will give you 1 year from the date you enter them, where as the new codes will add on a year to your current subscription. Rob B
Saw a way to mod the x-box on tech tv, along w/ ways around the subscribtion<Sp> May be able to find something at thier website
JFo
Bobbio; Just so you know, it's probably not a good idea to post info about modding Xboxes here on the forum, especially if it has anything to do with finding ways around paying for Xbox Live. I won't go into great detail, it has a lot to do with legality of modding consoles and violating such things as the DMCA. In other words, the owners don't want to get sued! Thanks for your understanding.

JoeyN
Bobbio so you know i did a little search on Tech TV. The thing they did wasnt about hacking into Live to use it free. They were talking about xbconnect which is a totally seperate software in which you need a comp to use. The article about it is at Playing online without Live capt
rustyjaw
I just got an email from MS today saying that my year will be up May 23rd and that my account will auto-renew on that date unless I unsubscribe first. So are you talking about buying a new kit to save money? How do you apply a new kit to your current account without canceling it?
Robot Monkey
Ed, you can plug in the subscription code as the renewal code at the dashboard. If you're in need of a new communicator, want the pack-in game and/or get a good deal on a Live kit, it can be a better value than the automatic $50 rebill. It was a heckuva a good deal for me when I got the 2.0 kit (voice comm, Tetris and 1 yr Live) for $40. -j
JoeyN
You can add a new subsciption code on top of your existing one with no problem at all. Go to the live renewal thing in the main dashboard. You can enter the new subscription code. Around nov of last year when a lot of our Live accounts were coming up for renewal there was a bestbuy coupon for $10 off a stater kit, and combined with reward certs from BB rewards some people got a year of live for next to nothing. Think paid like $13 for a v3 starter kit at the time with all the discounts added on. Too bad nothing like that is around now. capt
rustyjaw
So if I went out and bought a kit, and applied the new number today, it won't take effect until May 23rd (my auto-renewal date)?
JoeyN
Exactly right Ed.
rustyjaw
Cool! Guess I should have paid more attention last november when everyone else was renewing.
Graeme
As I warned earlier, some of the codes will start from the day you enter it, not the day that your current subscription expries. If you find a V2 starter kit (or even V1), they will not add on to your year. V3 kits have the newer cards (which you can purchase seperatly for the same price as the auto renewal) will add on an extra year.
rustyjaw
You know, I got to thinking this morning that I might like to change my gamertag, but I assume the only way to do that would be to allow my current sub to expire and then re-sub with a new account, right? Has anyone done this? I guess I would lose any times/scores posted on any games (like CMR4, or Midway Arcade Treasures). I'd also have to rebuild my friends list, but 90% of them are LCVGer so that shouldn't be hard... Is there a way to search to see if a certain tag is still available? Beer Monkey
As I warned earlier, some of the codes will start from the day you enter it, not the day that your current subscription expries. If you find a V2 starter kit (or even V1), they will not add on to your year. If so, they've changed it. I used a V1 starter kit to add my second year. I applied it two months prior to my expiration date, and it added exactly one year to my remaining account. It did not start from the day I applied it. Robot Monkey
Ed, this is what I would do: 1. Go to the manual Add Gamertag in your Live dashboard and type in the name you want. If nothing comes up, it's safe to assume that the tag is free for at least a couple seconds. Robot Monkey is taken, however. 2. Call 18004myxbox and ask to cancel and have the remaining months refunded pro rata (I believe they do this as part of the agreement, but YMMV). If they hesitate on the refund, tell them that it's in connection with a gamertag change. 3. Re-subscribe and hope your choice for a new gamertag wasn't taken in the interim 5 minutes. -j
Htide
CircuitCity.com has a 5 hour sale on video game accessories. A v3 kit is $55.99 and a renewal card is $39.99.
