fishepa
Hey, My headset broke awhile back, and I'm having a tough time replacing it, does anyone have a sure-fire replacement? I don't really want to spend $30 on an original.
Robot Monkey
From Robot Monkey's Xbox Live FAQ (exclusive to lcvg and coming soon): You can call Xbox tech support at 1-800-4MY-XBOX and order a new one for about $30. Sometimes Amazon.com shows used communicators for about $16. There will be an official Microsoft replacement headset available in the future, but I don't know when. Two other options are the MadCatz HeadCOM Headset available from Best Buy for $4.99 or a replacement from XLiveChat. I use the MadCatz headset and I like it, although some people complain about its design and sound quality. Any 2.5mm hands-free cellular phone will fit the voice communicator dongle -- but most aren't loud enough. You'll have to try these on your own time and make a decision as to its volume. -j
MrJames
The official headset will be available in a few weeks. http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/237683.asp

adamsappel
Try calling 18004myxbox and politely complaining about the easy breakage. My controller broke (the clip by the earpiece that attaches to the neckband) and MS replaced it for free. It was only a month or two old when it broke, so that may have influenced their decision, but calmly questioning the quality of the headset may get you satisfaction. Scar
Paul, if your headset broke like mine (small clip that attaches to the wrap around piece) then you might want to try an inexpensive solution such as super glue. I know it sounds weird but it really works! I tried the MadCatz headset as well as one of the Plantronics (I think Plantronics makes the MS headset) headsets from Radio Shack. Everyone complained that I was filling the games with nothing but static/feedback so I stopped using these headsets and went with the super glue approach. Good luck! Buck
I tried the MadCatz headset as well as one of the Plantronics (I think Plantronics makes the MS headset) headsets from Radio Shack. Everyone complained that I was filling the games with nothing but static/feedback I just picked up the MadCatz a few days ago as my headset broke, just as you described. Does anyone else have any experience with the MadCatz with better results? I haven't used it yet, so maybe I'll go hop on XBL and see if I get any complaints. If it's got one thing though, it's definitely more comfortable than the original, for me at least.
Robot Monkey
I've been using MadCatz since (IIRC) the winter. I haven't heard any complaints (not counting the ones about friendly-fire, sucky playing and unfunny chatter). Have you guys noticed any probs from me? -j
Zathras
I use a bellsouth headset - the key is you have to trim around the plug so it will fit in correctly. If it is slightly off you either get static or feedback loops or feedback loops.
Orpheus
I have the mad catz headset and anytime I've used it people immediately started bitching about feedback and noise. I ended up using some plasticweld I have at work to fix my live headset and that thing is rock solid now. I actually fell asleep with it on one night and it didn't break again (i use my live headset with my cell phone, i did not fall asleep midgame like some members of our forum). Camp
I really like the Mad Catz unit. The price I paid ($6) is great and it's much less bulky than the stock headset. My only complaint is the design of the speaker. It's an in-ear design. I'd prefer one that rests outside the ear.
