Parrish
I decided to take the plunge and pick up a PS2 this weekend. I've already got an X-box, so I've done pretty well in getting many of the good cross-platform titles, but I was wondering what PS2-only games you folks felt were 'the essentials?' adamsappel
Amplitude ICO Downhill Domination Rez Silent Hill 3 Gran Turismo 3 Virtua Fighter 4:Evo Devil May Cry Jak and Daxter Ratchet and Clank:GC Sly Cooper Kingdom Hearts

Parrish
Adam - Is the camera/control on Silent Hill 3 any better than on SH2? Also, though not on your essential list, I see you've got NFS:Underground and SSX3 - do you think the online play on those is good enough to forgo the graphic/sound upgrade of the Xbox versions? kelley
I'd put Bombastic and the Eye Toy on to that list.

I confess I'm too much of a weenie to actually play SH3, but I think any collection needs a good horror game. As for online PS2, if you just want to play a random game with a stranger, it works great. If you're trying to hook up with a known person, it takes a little juggling. Calvin
I would add SOCOM & SOCOM II if you like squad-based shooters.
The Daisy
I'd add Hot Shots Golf 3. Glen
Kain rising
I'll second Rez, Amplitude (and it's "prequel", Frequency, was good if you can find it), and Kingdom Hearts. And if you're a DDR fan, there's DDRMAX 1 & 2.
EnemaEms
If you are a wrestling fan (even if you are not), you must have WWE: Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain. IMHO, it is the best wrestling game to date on any system. Romier and others still think it is #2 behind No Mercy for the N64. -Dean-
Big Daddy Bling Bling
I second the Smackdown recommendation, it's ALMOST the wrestling game I've been waiting for. Until they get stackable tables and further improve the story mode, there's room for improvement...but it's about as good as it gets for now. Guilty Gear XX also needs to go on the list alongside VF4:E. Ace Combat 4 also shouldn't be forgotten. It's a bit old now, but still the best in its class and just about every element of it is done to perfection. I'd easily put it in my top 5 PS2 games. Beautiful graphics, perfect sountrack, slick gameplay, and a nice story.
AnthonyVolpe
Ico (utterly and completely brilliant) Ratchet and Clank (move over, Crash Bandicoot) SSX 3 (best extreme sports game ever made, save only for the Tony Hawk license) Silent Hill 3 (despite some awful voice acting from the secondary characters, everything else about this game is top notch - graphics, sound, music, gameplay, and overall design) Tekken Tag Tournament (total party game - if you're more hardcore get VF4 Evo instead) Amplitude (best music game outside of DDR) Twisted Metal Black (still the best vehicular combat game in existence) Fantavision (don't laugh... I found this game addictive as hell) Bombastic (same comment) Culdcept (imagine the Monopoly board game with minotaurs and goblins and make it 900 times more addictive - best part is you can get it for $14.99) Champions of Norrath (Diablo II on steroids) Castlevania: Lament of Innocence (never thought this would work in 3D - this game shut me up the minute I played it - DAMN!!!!) Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain (best wrestling videogame ever - only No Mercy comes close) I didn't mention any RPG's because I don't know if you're into that sort of crap... but if so: Final Fantasy X (one of my favorite videogames of all time - took 80 hours to beat) Final Fantasy X-2 (the fighting system is even more addictive in this game) Disgaea (utterly and completely hilarious - can take up to 200 hours to beat though, so plan on getting your money's worth) Kingdom Hearts (good enough for inclusion here - besides, you get to fight in real time and have Donald Duck and Goofy on your team) Xenosaga (if you're big on enormous storylines, this is for you)
Mark E
The PS2 version of Klonoa tops this list for me .
Ricky G
I'll second Final Fantasy X, one of the best games of All-Time. It has it all, story, graphics, gameplay.
FLYING SE7EN
I'll second the inclusion of Devil May Cry to the list. One of the best video games I've ever played. Pure genius. J.
Parrish
Thanks guys - I've bought and borrowed quite a few of these. Here's a Final Fantasy X question - as the first FF game I've touched, I'm a little put off by the relative lack of actual gameplay at the start of this thing. I'm told that it opens up considerably, though - how long does it take? :?
Zathras
Sly Cooper and the Thevious Raccoonus is a very very good platformer also.
dogbert
So, nearly 4 years later, anyone got any new suggestions for "PS2 Essentials"?
Covak
Shadow of the Colossus, not that anyone missed it

dogbert
The reason I brought this back to life is I'm thinking of 'rounding out' my PS2 collection a little now I've upgraded to the PS3 - Odin Sphere looks gorgeous using the BC smoothing and I missed buying a lot of classics when they first came out. Top of the list to get are Shadow of the Colossus & FF12.
Romier S
It's ashame you can't easily get ahold of some of the Shin Megami Tensei releases Brian. The Digital Devil Saga games and Nocturne especially were really great (you and I have talked about Persona 3). There's a good bunch of shmup releases to grab if you don't already have them. Graduis V is a "DUH!" purchase. As is R-Type Final and the recently released Raiden III for the PS2 is worth it as it's going for bargain prices anymore (19.99 etc). Ryan FB
I think...I think I actually bought R-Type Final from Brian. :lol Fake edit: I was going to say Gradius V too, but I looked it up and no.
Mark E
Yeah, I was just thinking Persona 3. That game was the longest thing I played last year, but so satisfying. I adored all the characters and the options and the way it played. I'm pretty sure it's the reason why I'm currently having a resurgence in my JRPG yen. It's getting a re-release in April with Persona 3 FES, which I think is the Festival edition, containing an extra 30 hours of gameplay or something insane like that...
dogbert
Yep, Persona 3 FES is getting bought for sure - the reissue is $29, which is a total bargain. Any other suggestions, guys, on PS2 games that are "essential" but overlooked?
