Bruce B
Didn't know if anyone has seen on Sportscenter the past few days on ESPN's they have been doing special reports on video games and athletes. Ray Lewis said on a good day he will play 7-8 hours and commented that 90% of the team play. Tonight they focused alot on Nascar on how the drivers not only use the games for training(because the equipment and tracks are tremendously accurate), but have also incorporated techniques they learned in the videogames when they actually race. They also commented that its pretty funny when they play online that someone is racing them and have no idea that its Dale Earnhardt. I believe the special reports during Sportscenter will be on through Thursday.
ChoiceStriker
I saw the last two installments of this - the professional gamers one reminded me a lot of MTV's "True Life: I'm a Gamer" episode, right down to featuring fatal1ty. The Nascar one was a little less interesting to me since I don't really play any of those games. But I can see how it would be good training for the tracks in real life. ChoiceStriker
Bruce, did you see the other segments of this? I missed the one that was on last night - I thought I heard them say something about how violence in sports video games affects kids... to which I say, not nearly as much as the violence in something like Manhunt. I can't think of any "ultra-violent" sports games that aren't played for laughs (Mutant League or NFL Blitz, etc). So I don't know what they were planning on talking about. I saw part of it this morning. They seemed to concentrate on MLB Slugfest and had a mother sitting with her son while he was playing it. I really doubt after this kid plays the game that if he plays Little League that he will ultimately punch the third baseman in the face, but who knows. It actually made me want to go out and buy Slugfest, which I'm not sure what that says about me.
ChoiceStriker
Ah, that's kind of what I figured they would talk about. I think most people know the Midway games are just supposed to be funny, but you're right - you just never know what could happen. Anyway, it was kind of cool to see a crossover of sports and video games on ESPN for a while. Now how about ESPN picking up a contract to televise the World Cyber Games? I'd be all over that. JohnEBGood
Overall, the whole weeklong look at video games was a pretty cool thing for Sportscenter to do.
