Robot Monkey
I didn't want to hijack the Potter topic, so I'll just say it here: Any fans of Gary Oldman should quickly locate a copy of State of Grace.
blackcalx
Was this movie before or after Romeo Is Bleeding? I absolutely love this movie, and it happens to be the first movie I remember seeing Gary Oldman act in. For those of us at work can you give a quick synopsis? Robot Monkey
I edited this synopisis from IMDB to remove some possible spoilers: "Terry Noonan returns home to New York's Hells Kitchen after a ten year absence. He soon hooks up with childhood pal Jackie who is involved in the Irish mob run by his brother Frankie." Noonan is Sean Penn, Oldman plays Jackie and Frankie is played by Ed Harris. -j
ChoiceStriker
blackcalx: I'm not entirely sure I'm understanding your post correctly, but State of Grace came out in 1990, three years before Romeo is Bleeding. Here's the plot summary from allmovie.com: Edit: Mono Mec?nico handled the summary a minute before me.
Calvin
Gary Oldman is good in just about every film he is in. His performance in The Professional is simply awesome.
Angry the Clown
His directorial debut Nil by Mouth, though a film in which he does not star, is also brilliant. I believe Sony released it to DVD in the US/Canada late last year (I need to look into getting it for myself actually as I don't buy domestic R2 releases). Oldman also wrote the screenplay which is based a fair bit on his youth in growing up in South London under the shadow of his alcoholic father. It is slow at times, building as it progresses, and is a VERY brutal and personal film that I think took an awful lot out of him, but I think it's the best British film to have come out of the 90s. He's fabulous in anything he does. Even in garbage like Lost in Space and Fifth Element, he never ceases to shine. Daniel
blackcalx
Thanks for the clarification, guys. I'll have to check it out. I never did see The Professional, but the reason eludes me. I've been meaning to see it, but I can never remember come time for rental night. I loved his character in True Romance, brief as it was. Something about him just exudes insanity and malice. Of course, there is always Brahm Stoker's Dracula. Even if I didn't enjoy the first two Harry Potter films I would certainly watch Prisoner of Ahzkaban for his role alone.
